Can i use one with the n-Vi as it doesnt take direct commands but needs to cycle through menus to select different modes / input ??

I want to be able to sequence a number of commands, ie turn on plasma, turn on cable box, turn on n-vi and select cable input (d1)

Any advice appreciated.

You can have direct access to all commands. See the AV2 and DVD5 manuals, they have the same codes.
So no problems to use a universal remote, you know, a usable home theater remote control one with light.

Had a look at the manuals but didnt see any reference to direct commanding although i see on the AV2 you can press input and then a number to select that, something the n-Vi doesnt seem to do

To answer your question more concisely–the n-Vi's supplied "quad" remote (pre / av / cd / dvd) does not provide explicit input source selection; however, this IS possible using a third-party remote (Philips RC5 system code 27), and, we have also verified this functionality using an older Naim AV2-specific remote.

The specific RC5 codes (using system code 27) in question are given below (updated n-Vi RC5 documentation will follow):

Thanks David. Playing with the handset, if i select AV on the Narcom remote then i can use the number keys to select the input so it looks like it will do explicit input selection. Sorted Just need to replicate this on the Harmony remote when it arrives.

I suppose the only other thing i'll need to do is send a dummy command to wake the n-Vi up as it needs a double key press when the display is off to get it to respond.

-you can use the narcom to direct access, as per above post. press the AV button prior to a numeric button.

-the need for double keypress may be removed on next firmware.

-a null command is likely to be added also, as far as I am aware there is no dummy command at present.

-direct codes ARE present in the AV2/DVD5 documents, be sure you read the instructions carefully though

Sorry, that post was cut and pasted from an old e-mail pertaining to the following change in operation between the AV2 and the n-Vi supplied remotes:

On the original AV2 remote, one could press the input button, then the appropriate numeric button to select the input (likewise, the mode button, followed by a numeric entry, could explicitly select the decoding mode, if available, based on the table given in the manual).

On the modal quad "DVDCOM" remote supplied with the DVD5 / n-Vi and later AV2 units, discrete input selection is NOT performed using the "input" button–nor is discrete mode selection possible using the "mode" button.

These are limitations of the quad remote, and not of the codes (or of the n-Vi itself).

Further, if the input label has been set to "None" on the n-Vi, or "---" on the AV2, the input cannot be explicitly selected via IR or demodulated RC5 remote control.




That is, "input" on the AV2 remote is modal–"input" on the n-Vi remote is actually "input ^", i.e., toggled.

Therefore, the RC5 "INPUT" command in the documentation is the modal button, as it functions on the AV2–use this first in your macro.

Well i bought a Harmony 885 remote and after a few evenings of playing its working well. Although an n-Vi is listed in their database it still needs setting up by teaching the remote the various direct inputs to allow the selection of Disc, DAB, Aux, Cable and learning up and down channel buttons for the DAB radio.

Looks pretty neat on the picture.
How does it feel? Think it will survive for more than a year or two? My universal remotes tend to have been worn down in two years top.

Btw, is the DVD5/AV2 in the database too?

I have that remote and will give it a 4 out of 10 for effort.

Otherwise its pretty nightmarish from an ergonomic perspective and the software is clunky and slow. You cannot programme the remote without being on line and its tedious.

The activities buttons are OK, but you cannot set up the sequence in which the commands are sent, this is crucial for my tv because if it does not detect a signal it turns back off.

If the activities fail it has the shitist help thing which does not work. The only work around was to have all failure commmands set on each activity. So for me I have to have a TV on command on each activity. If you do not do this it means clicking device, tv, tv on, activities, activities, to get you back to square.

All in all a pretty poor device.

I wouldnt agree with the above post. After a few evenings of playing about and learning all the features of the remote and how it can control the equipment, its now controlling my equipment how i want it. The help function just sorts out any issues if the remote gets out of sync with the equipment its controlling.

Three remotes now in the draw and the missus can use the whole set up without problems - bonus
