What does this mean? Does it mean it upscales standard resolution of dvd's to high definition?

I would also like to know what is going on with this 'proposed digital 1080p scaler'. It has been too long now, and even the new issue of stuff magazine say it is coming.

It means you can simeltaneously send picture out of the BNC, Scart & DVI sockets... allthough it's noticeably better to turn off the outputs you're not using.

The best application for what you're referring to is to use the scart to send picture & sound to a 2nd room whilst using BNC or DVI to feed the screen in your main room.

The term "High definition output" refers to the fact that BNC & DVI support progressive scan video, whilst scart/S-Video are interlaced - i.e. lower definition.

Nothing ever upscales regular DVD's to High Definition - if the resolution isn't there in the DVD then all an upscaler can do is produce an approximation as to what the image may look like in high def - but they can be upscaled to the resolution of a high def screen.

The raw n-Vi outputs, at best, 576p (or 480p for NTSC discs).

Many n-Vi owners, myself in particular, have found that hooking the device to a decent screen with a decent upscaler built in (Pioneer, Panasonic, and in my case Sharp), can get a far superior picture to that which has been upscaled by many a cheaper upscaling dvd player.

That isn't to say that I wouldn't welcome the further improvement that the scaler should add when it appears... but in the meantime I'm utterly delighted with the results I'm getting from my n-Vi/screen combo.

I have used all but the bnc outputs and so I was just curious by what they meant in their statement. It could seem misleading for someone who has never used or heard the system before, and who is interested in this new age of true hd entertainment.
What would be nice if they do bring out this 'proposed scaler' would be if it could display interlaced video off the dvi port. I use an external scaler with the n-vi and so this would be a great for me.
So Naim, if the 1080p scaler does come out will it be able to display interlaced signals digitally off the dvi port? Your answer would be much appreciated.

DVI has it's origins as a connection method between PC's and flat screen monitors and as such interlaced signals were not included in the original spec. To allow an interlaced video signal on the DVI connection, Naim would have to implement something outside the DVI specification; something they are unlikely to do.

If Naim do come up with a scaler, the output connector for it is likely to be HDMI, which does allow interlaced output although it seems unlikely you would want to purchase a scaler upgrade just to get an interlaced output for use with an external scaler.
