I am seriously considering getting a ps3 but would like to know the best way to connect it to my Panasonic crt tv. It has 1 component input (with progressive scan) scarts (2 rgb i think) and an s-video.
I saw a ps3 in a shop window this evening tonight and noticed on the back that there was only a hdmi output. What other connections are available?

im almost certain you can get a av multi plug to component for the ps3

you can get a component lead. one end is the sony connector, the other end your component plugs. I picked one up from game for £10.

Sorry Alan, but I think you are missing the point...

It's the whole idea of a high definition console to use at least a HD ready, better a full HD display.
The only analogue connection to get HD resolution out of is component. All the others are only PAL SD standard. So judged from the picture quality you could also stay with your old PS2 (if you have any)!

The analogue outputs of the PS3 where tested multiple times and all tests I have read rated them as quite bad :-(

The only way to see what this box is capable of is to go over the digital HDMI output! Probably over a HDMI->DVI cable if neccessary.

So you better put you money in a new display first or you could be dissappointed.

You could also move your DVD player/recorder to one of the scart RGB inputs. Then you have the component input free for the PS3...

No need for a switchbox - try before buy. I doubt you will see a big difference with SD interlaced on a CRT. On a Flatscreen with progressive capabilities this could be different.

The TV i have is a panasonic 32pd30 with progressive scan through the component input. What would i get with a ps3? i.e. how high a resolution? 720p? Would i notice the difference with bluray discs on my screen with the ps3 connected through the component input compared with standard discs through the component input with progressive scan? Also does the ps3 output progressive scan?

Your TV must be quite modern to take in progressive signals?

A CRT can do a picture natively out of an interlaced signal. A flatscreen will always have to deinterlace it first.
Is the difference in picture quality of you DVD player/recorder in interlaced or progressive mode big? You could test that...
The difference between component and RGB should be small.

Since I use only the HDMI output of the PS3, I don't have one of those adapters for component. So I can't test that. Over HDMI you can choose the output up to 1080p. I think over component max. will be 1080i. Even more important -> What say's the manual to your TV, what can he take in?

I was using my PS3 with a Loewe Planus CRT through the standard lead and the picture was OK, it only had RGB scart input and not component. Changed to a Samsung 1080P LCD and the difference via HDMI is staggering. Picture is set to just scan the input so no scaling and it is very good. The PS3 does run from 480I upwards, my one somehow read the video output and set itself to the max resolution it could use. Not sure how it does this but it worked fine. I did try manually setting the output to 576P to see the difference between this and 1080P and it was very noticable. I use the PS3 for games mostly so do not want to get into the arguments elsewhere on this forum on the merits of PS3 vs DVD5 etc. Hope this helps, tne upscaling SD DVD feature on the PS3 version 1.8 update works well enough for me, it's impossible to watch a movie in peace with 5 kids in the house anyway.

Is there a good quality PS3 - component cable available? I have seen one in Game shops but it looks pretty cheap.

The 1.8 version update upscales standard DVD up to 1080P if your TV / projector does this. It looks fine on my Samgsung 1080P TV. OK it's not the cutting edge of AV but I am more than happy with it against my old set up.
