Oh no!

After 8 or so years our Loewe Xelos has gone pop.

First a hissing noise, then the screen kept shrinking in a concave / bow tie shape.

Finally it kept switching off - and then the inevitable burning smell. Appears dead!

So - replace or repair? Anyone any idea of cost to replace the tube - if it is - does it sound like it?

Regards

Lee

Areplacemnt tube for our Thompson 32" crt would have been £625 if one could be found. Strikes me a Loewe may be even more expensive.

Hi Lee,

If it were me I'd have it looked at, as the symptoms you describe sound like a power supply fault, not the tube.

Best Regards,

Could also be a busted flyback transformer–better start looking for a new set.

I have a Loewe TV of similar vintage, and Loewe did a recall on it about 12 months ago. This entailed fixing some iffy solder joints in the power supply.

Did your TV get this recall? (FWIW I'm in the UK.)

Hi Lee, I have had a couple of things happen with my Xelos. first was the tube 28" version went symptoms cutting off all the time, slight red lines in the picture and lousy contrast. Cost of new tube was about 600 quid. as the set was only 4 years old I contacted Linn/Loewe and they contributed half.

Anyway a year later it went bang, big smell, this time the line output transformer, cost about 100 quid to get fixed I recall.

the thing is it is well worth getting these repaired as I have yet to see a flat panel that can match the picture quality.

hope this helps, Gary

Lee,
it would be well worth getting it looked at - as other people have said, it's more likely to be a power supply problem than the tube - if so it shouldn't be too costly. The problem is that once you've been spoilt with such a good quality CRT, you are going to have to spend an awful lot more to get an LCD that will come close... Loewe being the only brand that comes to mind IMO.

When mine went it was the powersupply for the tube.

There was a suspicious amount of Loewes on eBay for a while with the self same problem.
