I've just set up an AV2 / NAPv175 /NAC102 combination being fed by optival connections from a Denon DVD player and a Sky HD box which are connected to a projector. There appears to be a lip sync problem where I'm getting sound slightly later than the picture. I've tried using the lip sync adjustment on the AV2 but this only seems to delay the sound which makes the problem worse! Anyone any ideas about what I should do?

Does the denon have lipsync?

Thats probably where the issue is.

Yes it does, but again like the AV2 it only seems to be to delay the sound I guess I should go back and play around with it some more - there are a lot of set-up options!

Does the delay only occur on DVD playback, or does it also happen when watching Sky?

Sit really close to the speakers, and really far away from the telly ... get the distances right and sound and picture should synchronise sorry

It's both, though having made an adjustment on the Sky box it's not quite so bad.

Hi Richard,

I remember having this problem when my plasma TV was new (I do have completely different setup though).

In my case I never tracked the problem to a specific source, but over a period of burn-in/warm-up over a couple of days it all settled down and synched up.

My guess was some software having to work extra hard somewhere to deal with an audio (or picture) problem, that sorted itself out as the gear warmed up and stabilised.

I'd suggest ignoring it for a day or two and just see if it irons itself out...

I second this. I have had problems with this in the past. Some dvd players had problems a lot in the early days (i remember my first player which i still have in the bedroom that i bought over 8 years ago being terrible with some discs) with certain discs being worse than others. I have also noticed it with others but after a while it wasn't so obvious. I don't know if they burn in and cure it or not but it does pretty much go away. I remember reading an article about it years ago stating that it may be more obvious because dvd was so much better (than vhs in those days) that it was easier to spot that they were not syncing properly.

I also found that trying not to worry about it helps. It did seem to go away.

However you have just reminded me so i will probably start looking out for it again

Delaying audio is a easy...the laws of physics on the other hand dont generally allow you to put the audio in the future I'm afaid, not unless you own a "flux-capacitor".

You must delay the video somehow (put it through a scaler, this will delay video...). This is likely to be a cumulative effect of the mpeg/satellite processing and will change depending on source material, time of day, atmospheric press.....

This should be in the Home Theatre section BTW...

My 1st generation DLP tv had issues with sync also. It is probably do to the upconversion from 480p to 720p or 1080i.

My newish LCD also has the same problem with some sources.

I think the problem lies in the conversion/upscaling that most HD tvs and projectors have to do to reach their native resolution.

Video delay is more common due to the above (scaler lag). But de-muxing AV streams can cause either issue.

As I said, its easier to delay audio to correct for this.
