its taken almost an hour today to get my n-vi to work, kept switching itself off when powered up, then would not power down, would not accept any signal inputted to it, selected disc, tray would not open, etc etc, then all of a sudden its bursts back in to live, the trouble is when it works i think its brilliant,

Is this with the latest firmware update ?

I'm tempted to update mibe before Xmas just to see if it'll play those DVD quiz games properly. Otherwise its the trusty Sony out of the loft again :-(

I upgrade to the latest firmware about a month ago and the system is very well behaved. On the only occasion that the menu became stuck (my 18 month old grandson got hold of the remote!*%*!), I powered off and back on and this resolved the issue.

I have found only one issue with the new firmware that initially gave me a concern. When playing CD's I change the Mode from auto (stereo) to the first of the multi-channel surround settings. This works well however I followed this with an Audio DVD which showed the correct setting on the display but gave appalling noises through the speakers. I feared that the system had blow and I would hate to be without my system even for a short period! However, I removed the Audio DVD, re-loaded the CD, set the Mode to stereo, re-loaded the Audio DVD and everything was then OK. A similar problem occurs when changing from CD in surround mode to a video DVD, in this case the sound is not as corrupted but it still sound bad.

Hi JohnR1

you should speak with your dealer about obtaining new firmware shortly.

There is a firmware update pending for the n-Vi.

This could be a hardware issue, but I would also suggest speaking with your dealer shortly about the pending firmware relase

Steven n, i have not tried any dvd-audio for a long time. but when i spoke to naim regarding the problems with dvd-audio they seemed to suggest they might never be corrected, something to do with the company that supplys the relevent boards being taken over by someone else,

question for AV@naim, seems a bit quick for the next upgrade, is there a known problem for the last one, as it was only done a couple of months ago ?

John R1, I didn't understand your issues with Audio DVD, can you expand. The quality of the Audio DVD play back is stunning and I have no real problem. Grover Washington's Winelight 192/24 is an excellent example. The temporary issue I discovered is only because I like the more rounded sound from playing CDs in surround mode and only occurs when I go from this, to playing Audio DVDs. This is a very small glitch in the firmware (I am fairly certain) and is easily corrected by resetting the Mode prior to loading the Audio DVD. My speakers, for the record, are Linn Keilidh(front) /Index 2(rear)/Centrik(Centre).

stephen-N, the issue i had with dvd-a was it was unable to let me select anything apart from the advanced resolution out-put,this happens on more than half of the ten or so dvd-a discs that i have, ie if the disc also had say a dd 5.1 soundtrack, this option does not appear on the menu, the worst disc was tubular bells which does output in dd 5.1, which is just as well as the advanced resolution soundtrack adds pauses to the music where there isn't any, hope this helps john

stephenN, just to clarify the nv-i when playing dvd-a is far better than my arcam dv-89 and denon 3805 was, even with my mk speaker set-up, i turned it on today and it is working fine again, don't know what happened yesterday as that was the worst issue i have had with it since i got it about 17 months ago, ps it has been replaced once,

John... I had this on mine a couple of times just before I got the latest firmware from my dealer about 10 days ago (the same release they're mentioning above).

Hasn't put a foot wrong since.

Mike1380, how long did it take you to get your n-vi to work before the last update, only mine took an hour on tuesday, did not work at all last night, and first tried at 11-00 this morning finally came to life at 16-00, correct me if i am wrong mike, but i find this totally unaceptable, my dealer has said he will lend me something on christmas eve, so i presume mine will be shippedback to naim for them to have a look at, ps mike how did you get the latest update so early if naim say its only just been released ?

My n-Vi failed on a power-down cycle (into standby). Performing a basic reset (mains power-off) got it working again in 5 mins flat, but it failed again each of the next 4 times it was put into standby.

The firmware update sorted it, no probs since.

I got my mitts on the update as a beta release... I'm on good terms with my dealer & both he and I were prepared to take the risk and try out the beta version.

John... what's acceptable & unacceptable are purely a matter of personal opinion, but I can certainly see your point of view.

Hope your issue is resolved soon.

Mike1380, if mine worked in 5 mins fair enough, mine at the moment is taking hours of powering off and back on

John really sorry you are having this problem, if you can get to your dealer I am sure he can install the latest code for you, the factory is closed now for the holidays but if you are really stuck you could drive over to my house, I have a spare machine you can use over christmas.

John there are 2 versions of the new code, 1 with rock solid lip sync but slower digital lock on when switching, if you are using the nvi with a sky box, I woud go for the fast digital lock on and slightly less good lip sync. The lip sync can then be adjusted in the sky box if you notice the issue (hd version). Its just a trade off we had to make on the master chip.

Paul, am using virgin v+box, when i got it going today it used to display tv, thats now disappeared, it now shows digital 1 and it was out-putting front, centre, rears, but no sub ? the only problem my dealer might have is getting the tray to open to try the update as i can't get it to open at the moment,

Hi John,

It sounds to me like the unit has half reset itself, this could possibly point to a hardware issue, but you won't know until the new firmware is applied (I say this because your digital 1 label has set itself to default and it now sounds like "bass-mix" is switched off, the default setting)

-has a factory reset been tried yet (early firmware does not have this setting, so you may not be able to find the settings shown below)?

***************************************************************************************************************************
NOTE THIS WILL RESET ALL SETTINGS TO OUT OF THE BOX DEFAULTS

To do a Factory Reset:-

-switch to disc input (no disc/drawer closed)

-bring up front panel Setup Menu (either press and hold MODE button on front panel for 2 seconds OR press SETUP button on remote control for 2 seconds)

-navigate (either using remote navi keys or front panel buttons) to Other Settings->System Reset->Factory Reset
(note there are various other levels of "reset" in this menu also)

-a message appears on the front panel once you have instigated a Factory Reset

-once the Factory Reset starts, it will spend a few seconds clearing internal settings and when it has finished it will display "Reset Complete, Please switch off power then restart"

-once power cycled from rear mains switch, use as per normal

***************************************************************************************************************************

If the issue(s) are still evident after the update, then I suggest we get this unit back for diagnosis and arrange something ASAP (unfortunatley, like Paul suggests, we are closed at present).

-do you still have my "vmc" naim mail address, if so mail it.

This couln't have happened at a worse time...

AV@naim, will try that as soon as i get in as i am at work until 06:00, not sure what your "vmc" is, i presumed that if it was still playing up monday when my dealer calls, he would ship it back to you, he said he would lend me something until it got sorted, thanks again.
