Not yet watched but the Saturday Telegraph had the cover mount DVD of Pygmalion [Play by GB Shaw, and also screenplay] with Leslie Howard as Prof Higgins. Howard's last film role was as RJ Mitchel, the designer of the Spitfire, in the 1942 film 'The First Of The Few.' Walton wrote the wonderful score, and poor Mr Howard died in action himself within weeks of the completeion...

I cannot wait to see Pygmaion, made in 1937.

Last night watched "The Wild" (My partner loves the modern animation movies!). Absolutely fantastic image quality. She liked the story, I loved the technical aspects. Looked wonderful up-resed to 1080 on my plasma screen.

Dear Munch,

I was able to check my source on this and whilst that is no guarantee as it is the background notes on the Video Issue of 'The First Of The Few,' the quotation runs as follows:

"...Leslie Howard (who also directs, and who tragically went missing in action shortly after the film was made) as RJ MItchell..."

If you have a reference that you could give me that shows his death was "not in action," as you state, I would be most grateful and interested, as certainly the issuers of the film have no business to put such a gloss onto it, if this reporting of Howard's death is not true.

Kindest regards from Fredrik

I think he was in 'Gone With The Wind' - what a tedious film[!] - so I guess that is it.

Kindest regards from Fredrik

Over recent days have watched the "Band of Brothers" box set. Amazing film making. The extras disc is also fascinating, with in depth interviews with survivors of the original Easy Company of the 506PIR. Very brave men, whom Spielberg and Hanks have done proud I think.
Much more involving than "Saving Private Ryan" for me.

Last night I watched the latest "Ultimate" edition of Dr No.

Now, normally I am sceptical about such special editions, the studios looking to screw more money from punters for the same old thing repackaged with a couple of old docu extras thrown in. However, in this case I was pleasntly surprised. No, hold that, I was amazed, staggered even...

What has been done here is to turn an old and familar film into one that looks like it was minted just yesterday yet retaining all the atmosphere of having been shot in the early 60's. This is as close as you can get to getting into the time machine and having a first showing of the master print.

Played back on the n-Vi into my 42" Fujitsu plasma, I have to say, I was rivetted. Familiar as I am with this film, it was like watching it for the first time.

I also got From Russia with Love and can't wait to watch it. I will also go straight out and buy loads more as many places currently have the Ultimate editions on BOGOF. Even if you have all the previous releases of Bond on DVD, go and buy these. Seriously.

Don't be surprised if this is my hot favourite dem disc at the Bristol show next year... you have been warned (But we all love Bond, don't we??).

Chris,

agreed!! As good as Dr No although I notice one or two poor edits that they haven't smoothed over - probably a good thing on balance, otherwise where do you stop??

I now have all the Connery releases and all are very impressive indeed!!

Amazon tell me "Dr No" has been despatched. Perhaps the other 2 Connery ones needed to round it out!.

Two??!! You mean "other four"...

Goldfinger
Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
Diamonds are Forever

Still at BOGOF, it's not going to hurt too much... I would be interested to see some of the later ones and whether the improvements make such a big difference.

Doh! For some reason I always forget those last two. Still, at BOGOF I guess it has to be done! We were amazed at the visual and audio quality of FRWL. I route TV and DVD through my 282/SC/200 and it sounds great in my admittedly quite small room.
