Not really sure what your post is getting at. I've not heard the n-vi at all yet but would have thought that it depends largely on the way you store music on the ipod in terms of compression. The ipod can really sound quite good (for what it is)if you use a reasonable bit rate.
Jay, which gen ipod do you use? I think its a bit harsh calling it a crap source - for what it is and what it costs it aint half bad! Also, what bit rate are you using? Regards J
Have not heard the n-vi, but into a tube setup at my house, my two year old 40 gig ipod using Apple Lossless or AAC 320, or the laptop using the same CODECs wirelessly with Airport Express, sounds remarkably good. The new iTunes allows use of LAME for comparable sound at higher compression. My other sources sound better, but the iPod is far from crap, in my opinion, compared to many alternatives. Factoring in the convenience factor and the low cost, and I think the iPod is worth a listen not only as a secondary source but as a primary source in many applications. Has anybody heard it with the iSupply?

I started a thread on the Padded Cell that didn't spark much interest, but anyone interested in how good an iPod can sound could check it out. Red Wine Audio's iMod has generated a fair amount of buzz in the portable listening forum Head-Fi. For the 4-5 hrs or so of portable listening I do each week, the enjoyment has been greatly enhanced. BTW, I have only ever used the Apple lossless codec; life's too short to listen to crap music (or to drink cheap wine).
