I have an NVI, Sky HD, Sony KDLX2000 40inch and XBOX360. I can get surround sound when playing a DVD and through Sky HD but not with the XBOX360. Should i be able to and if so how? This was set up by a hifi company (i have little technical knowledge) and i am loathed to ask them back!

I am presuming you are using the XBOX via analogue.

The analogue inputs on the n-Vi are straight stereo (i.e. no surround processing). This was done for cost/performance reasons.

Other options are:-

-use an external DAC to digitize the analogue from the XBOX, then feed in to one of the coax inputs on n-Vi

-obtain a optical to coax converter and feed this in to one of the coax inputs of the n-Vi

If he's using Sky HD its most likely via optical. So that input is already used. On the other hand he may be using via analogue, thus allowing optical input from XBOX...

The converter would probably be cheapest option, so try that first?

age bailey, you could use a toslink splitter which i use, i think munch has one as well, you can plug 3 optical cables in and have one optical cable out, only cost £7.99 from tv cables, i find it works very well,

You could also use a TOSLINK to coaxial convertor box, which should also do the trick.

Ok, i bought the Toslink and connected everything up, including moving to the xbox digital out. The Sky sound still works a treat, i get nothing from the xbox. I put sky on standby when turning the xbox on and left the same nvi digital channel on. What am i doing wrong? Very frustrating.

Ok I took the digital lead out of the back of the NVi (it was the direct link to sky hd box) and connected it to one of the toslink connections (one of the two). I then connected the other end of the toslink to the NVi. The final connection i made was from the Xbox360 to the toslink (same end as the sky connection). Finally, i removed the two analogue Xbox360 leads from the NVI (front screen of NVi clearly shows that the xbox was definitely into analogue). Sky still works briliantly but no XBOX360 sound.

I hope that this answers the question?!?!?

Also, the xbox360 works perfectly if it connected direct to the NVi without SKY/toslink.

note above neil, he gets SPDIF ok if connected direct to n-Vi, SPDIF must be enabled.

Do we know what sample rate the XBOX outputs? (I dont know as I dont own one...)

From what i read:-

he has purchased a toslink splitter and is finding that when both Sky and XBOX SPDIF is connected, he only gets sky SPDIF.

connecting direct SPDIF from devices is ok.

Technically the splitter "should" be passive to sample rates, but...

ive heard rumours of the sky hdmi being "live " even when off , might be the same for the optical . But i doubt it .I run the same kit albeit into a different processor with no problems .

Age have you got the the output optic lead to the n/vi in the right socket on the three way switch? And the xbox and the sky optic outs going into 2 of the three inputs on the switch.
Mine were ok on the n/vi.I had two sats and a Xbox into mine.Another ? have bent your optic leads? Have you twisted the plugs to much when you line them up to put them in? And the last ? are they fully in the socket?
Hope this helps.

munch. i don't think he has the same splitter as us, i also used x-box 360 and tv-drive into mine with no problems, apart from the odd time the n-vi decided not to pick up the input, then just re-booted the n-vi

Hi

Really appreciate all of the time you guys have put into solving my frustrating problem. I have ordered the optical switch and will let you know the outcome in a couple of days. Worth the wait as xbox in surround sound is fantastic. Thanks once again. Age Bailey
