OK - this is hopefully a very basic AV question.

I have a Sony DVD/HDD recorder that I'd like to connect to my Naim System to replay 2-channel audio on my old Sony TV The connection to the Naim preamp will be via a DIN/Phono connector into the Sony box.

My question is does it matter what type of SCART cable I use (it's about 7 years old so no HDMI connection) - there seems to be RGB only and full SCART - is the latter unnecessary, or even likely to be worse. Is there any other connection type that's likely to be better?

If the SCART RGB lead has audio too, then maybe, but IMHO this format is not the most ideal connector for audio.

On the other hand, I feel a full SCART is more sturdy in a socket than a lesser populated plug

Currently my D-TV audio (as the freeview box is in the TV itself) is obtained from a SCART output audio-wise to my naim system.

You can get an adapter which plugs in to a scart socket which allows input or output of S video and also has 2 phono sockets as well.
I have one it seems to work ok Sky+ box to front /rear processor.
