I know that Naim don`t recommend surge protectors for their hifi. However, I am having a pioneer plasma wall mounted in my tv room and the salesman strongly suggested I buy a surge protector. The one in the store was by Monster Cable and cost $300.00! Do I need a surge protector for my plasma? david

yes I have an opinion, but I don't know how useful it is! When I had my naim amps set up by my dealer he recommended I did not use a surge protector so I didn't and I've never tried with so I don't know how much, if any, difference they make to the sound quality.

For most of my other electronics (TV, DVD, cable box, PC) do have surge projectors (which were all a lot less than $300 - assuming US $), but I've never had anything break/blow up (with things plugged through surge protectors and straight into the wall) and I have had a few power outages.

For a bit of peace of mind I plug most of my expensive electronics through a surge protector, but I wouldn't pay $300 for one. I think the surge protectors I have are around $30.

Hi Davidf,

Yes, I think it can be done by feeding your plasma TV from a different power point (socket) than the one used for your Naim system. Being on another electric circuit I am pretty sure it would not affect the sound quality.

Just experiment a bit.

Cheers,

George

thanks, guys. I don`t have my naim system hooked up to the plasma. The issue is whether a plasma tv itself requires a surge protector. My plasma will be wall mounted with the plug going in the wall behind the tv. Only the plasma will be plugged into this. Do they make surge protectors that can be used with flat screen tv`s plugged into the wall when the tv is wall-mounted? I will need a surge protector that can be plugged into the wall socket behind the tv and still leave room for the mounting bracket and mounting hardware. Thanks, david

That depends on the construction of the plasma screen and how much space there is behind it when mounted on the wall. I don't know of any surge protectors that would be VERY thick and socket fitted... but I do know that there are surge protectors that can be mounted in the electical cabinet together with circuit brakers, but such an installation must be done by a professional electrician.
