Am plannong to replace my home desktop with a laptop and saw options from Acer and Sony with a Bluray drive: what standard would it be for playback through my TV? Also the laptop screen is apparently full HD and some models have 5.1 capability!

Because of the studios fears of hd-quality copies, it has to be protected by HDCP which leaves HDMI or HDCP capable DVI for picture.

The analogue component outputs could be blocked or scaled down to standard definition...

happy watching

HDCP capable DVI = DVI-D I believe

Neil, I had a friend who tried to do this Blu-ray on a mega PC costing £2000 from Sony last year. The thing failed to work correctly (jumps, freezes, etc.) and Sony never got it to work. He gave it back. If you decide to go down this route, make sure you check it works quickly so you can give it back if it doesn't.

Frank.
