Because I’m planning on moving I’m expecting to have to replace my bog standard 10-year-old 26 inch TV. I don’t want to pay too much but looking at the flat screen TV’s in places like Currys I’ve noticed that the picture quality doesn’t seem as good as my old TV. How much as a minimum do I need to spend to get something reasonable and do you have any suggestion of makes and models I should check out?

If you're looking for a decent TV then go and get some advice from a decent TV retailer.

You wouldn't go to Currys for advice on a decent Hifi would you?

If you cannot see decent display anywhere you look, consider CRT 28 or 32 " JVC from Argos (c. £220-£330) (or Samsung slim tube HD 32" CRT from good dealer).

So far I too have avoided buying new whizzy-flattish but crap/overpriced/lasts 5 seconds technology.

You might usefully check out good local repair etc dealers selling great CRTs 28"-33" £30-£80 until anyone really knows what's going on.

Although not so simple, there is a case for good budget projectors (e.g. Epson etc with cheap lamp-replacements) from DVD etc/good cheap Freeview or Cable or Skybox sources.

Probably best 'interim' option is decent non-16:9 20" CRT TV about £89 ...

You’re right I wouldn’t. However I’m not as bothered about the quality of a TV as I am about the quality of a hi-fi. Spending £1000 as an upgrade on my hi-fi is not a big deal whereas I have a mental block about spending that much on a TV, even though it gets more use than my hi-fi. Also I’m not all that convinced that there are huge differences between different TV’s, certainly compared with hi-fis. I just want a decent TV that doesn’t cost too much.

I have a Loewe Mimo CRT TV, which has excellent picture quality - far better than any LCD I have seen. They are not cheap though; a 100Hz Panasonic would be very good and much cheaper.

Loewe prefers for their dealers to only display LCD and Plasma TV's. This means they have to get rid of the CRT stock they still have, you might be able to find an excellent set for very little money.

This weekend, I saw a brand new 32" Mimo for 999 euros (GBP 620?) including the little cabinet...

Hi,I am wanting a new telly aswell but what i have found is no plasma or lcd match crt for picture quality with tv broadcasts.This has probably been mentioned alot before.I have been told it is due to tv broadcasts faults and it is revealed with plasma and lcd.But i am not prepared to pay 1000+ pounds for a poorer picture.Daryl

It isn't the TV at fault but the quality of the transmission.

If you put a SkyHD signal into the TV you will see why.

Going back to a standard "non HD" signal is almost unwatchable, espicially with something like football.

What might help is a decent external scaler instead of the accountant-procured internal ones that current fixed pixel panels carry.

I hear good stuff about the PixelMagic Plasma Enhancer, which looks decent, is user friendly and has an analog tuner, too.

i dont get any problems with my panny pw6b when fed from my telewest tv drive through either sd or hd material, in fact my pq is far better than it was through my last crt tv ?
