AV, Manu & Mike - thanks for the replies - (Manu - as it happens, we talked on the phone this this week about my NAC112).
AV's answers were fairly straightforward - it looks like I can't do what I asked about in Q1 and the answer to Q2 was to be found in the combined DVD5/AV2 manual.
