Anybody using an Apple TV with a DTT plugged into the USB port for recording to the internal hard disk?
This could be a workable solution for me as it means i could shove a Blu-ray drive in my PC and stream the video through the Apple TV to the telly. Then I could use the Apple Tv with DTT in the USB as a PRV. Sorry for all the bloody TLAs. Jono |

Not an expert Jono but I "think" the usb port on the Apple TV is for diagnostics and stuff. That's what's on the Apple pages. Gary needs to chime in and correct me! Jay |

Sorry Jono 13, Jay is right:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304987 The same with my DVB-C settop box, wich has a customer unusable USB and ethernet port! You'll have to install drivers and software for this USB device to be recognised and used from it's host. Which you can't (at least not without hacking). You can take a look here: http://wiki.awkwardtv.org/wiki/Main_Page The video side of Apple TV is about renting movies online, so you don't have to go out to fetch a physical media. But I think we have to wait for quite some time to get that feature up and running here in Europe. The copyright negotiations are taking (too) much time. Since the same movie can have different distributors in different countries with different laws, I don't expect a solution soon. They are already behind schedule for the US alone... http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/03/04/investors...future_products.html Jobs on the Hot Seat > the last but one paragraph It's nice to stream music over AirTunes to AppleTV with the new Take2 software, because it has a screen with menus attached, remote control and better WiLan (compared to the AirPort express). I don't have to go in the other room with the computer to take control. Btw. Sony is preparing an extension pack which probably does what you want for the PS3 named "PlayTV". But with the small 2.5" notebook HDs in those devices, there will not be much space to record... happy watching Adrian |

Thanks chaps.
I can of expected that answer after looking at the Elgato web site where a similar debate is running. As usual vested interests seem to be more important than customer satisfaction, not Apple or Elgato, but the content providers again. If, however, Wadia can unlock the digital stream out of an iPod legally then there is hope in this area in the future. Jono |

It always struck me as a simple route forward. The design should allow for the USB port accommodate different receivers.

From a hardware perspective, easy to imagine. In terms of software, media handling, and content provider issues ... a whole can of worms that I'm sure will keep a legion of Apple engineers and almost as many lawyers well busy!
