With an AV2, one would use the VIPS inputs in the analogue domain, or optical/coax for Dolby Digital or DTS 5.1 material–just like a DVD5.
The BDP-S1 will not output Dolby TrueHD (Meridian Lossless Packing with a different name) over the optical or coaxial outputs, only over HDMI....

I second Dave's recommendation and use the analog outputs from the player. Happily the AV2 has analog 7.1 input - a nice bit of foresight!

Most cinematic sound mixers work in 5.1 anyways–the EX rear channels are a dirty little secret (synthesized on many releases!).

Very interesting! I never knew that we have Meridian to thank for the new standard! So all new receivers/processors will have to be HDMI equipped so they can take the video and the audio. Shame the n-Vi doesn't have those same 7.1 (well 5.1 in the n-Vi's case) direct inputs into the power stage....

Over the last ten years i have had 5.1/6.1 and at the end of the day you only need a good 5.1 even if you play for Chelsea and have a 200 seater cinema in your home 5.1 will do it, If it is done well.munch
