Munch, rest of system is: DVD Player is an Arcam DV27A modified with an SDI output board. The SDI board takes the signal directly off the mpeg decoder chip, bypassing any internal processing within the DVD player. The SDI signal from the Arcam is fed into a DVDO VP30 Video Processor for deinterlacing and scaling. The VP30 is fitted with the deinterlacer upgrade, the ABT102 Precision Deinterlacer. All sources i.e. DVD, Freeview, Humax, XBOX360 (my son's, honest) are fed through the VP30 so it can work its magic and which also acts as a hub meaning I only need one cable (HDMI) going out to the projector. Projector is an Optoma H79, 1280x720 DLP. This projects onto a fixed screen 6ft across that I built myself using screen material from screen manufacturer Ellie. Audio side is handled by a Denon AVC-A1SR integrated amp/processor. Speakers: M&K S85s (x3) at the front and M&K SS150 (x2) tripoles at the rear. And finally a Velodyne HGS15 servo-controlled sub. The World Cup coverage on BBC HD looked rather spectacular on the projector. The part before the match where they presented from the balcony looking across to the Brandenburg Gate and the people in the square below looked just about transparent to me. It was like there was nothing in between me and the objects I was looking at. We were all very impressed, it felt like being there in Berlin! Allan |

Paul, I don't think it will accept a SKy card unfortunately. I think Sky have arranged it so that their cards only work in a Sky box. You can do what munch suggests and continue to use your existing sky box for the Sky channels and the humax for BBC HD. In your case you won't have to install another feed from the dish, the existing one will operate both boxes but only one box at any one time. Allan |

Thanks for the reply Munch, Allan. Sadly you’ve both confirmed my thoughts on what the reply was going to be, and is one of the grievances I hold against Sky. I would like to go out and buy a box from a manufacturer of my choice, and just pay Sky a set fee for services used, instead of being tied to their choice of equipment and charges.

Munch,
The room isn't actually very big. It's about 9ft x 11ft. It was a spare bedroom that we've turned over totally into a dedicated cinema room. It's totally light-proof so we can get blackout conditions any time. The walls/ceiling are various shades of mid to dark grey and quite a bit of wall area is masked in black velvet over RPG acoustic panelling to cut down on light reflecting around the the room, splashing back on the screen and reducing contrast ratio. The description sounds a bit ominous but walking in there really is like walking into a small private cinema. Paul, forgot to mention, but just for information the Humax has both HDMI and component video outputs. Allan |

Having recently purchased an HDTV worthy antenna (aerial!) I have now started engaging in the HDTV experience myself. Yep, the World Cup syndrome. I can appreciate now what all the fuss is about, because when the feed is up to snuff and full screen, the picture is astoundingly good. Time to address TV sound too methinks.
The evolution of HD in states has been quite convoluted. Digital cable seems to have the most promise but carries more crap than good. Generally bandwidth is devoted to more channels of dross than better (HD) signal. Some HD channels (local major networks) are still only available "Off Air" which means a bit of a struggle with getting a consistently good clean signal for all variety of VHF/UHF broadcast quality. Dropouts in signal create annoying glitches in picture and sound. It's either all "perfect" or stuttering like a scratchy DVD. So if you don't have line-of-sight to the Sears tower or suchlike you're in for trouble. I never thought I would take umbrage with a tree until now ;-) |

Excellent. I suggest that when the automatic tuning starts you go away and make a cup of tea or something as it takes a while.

Munch,
On mine it's on channel 273. If you are paging through the 'List' of channels, it's after BBC Test 1/2/3 - so keep going. If you are using your sky dish, just specify Astra 2 (BBC HD is on there), no need to add Astra 1 as well. I'm away from home at the moment, hence the delayed reply, but will be back again late tonight if I can help further. Allan |

Munch,
Can you check which version of firmware is installed in your humax. If you've got version 1.00.04 then you should be ok. If it's 1.00.03 then you'll need the update. To check version number, press menu, then select system, then system status Allan |

Hi Munch,
It's a shame you had some inconvenience and delay along the way but I bet you're happy now. I'm very much looking forward to beyond just watching the world cup and being able to watch things like wimbledon and the recent programming that's been made by the BBC in HD, just waiting to be shown in the way it was meant to be. Hi munch,
Good to hear you are enjoying BBC HD on the Hummax. I watched the England game on mine a couple of days ago and I don't know if it's just me but I think the HD quality is even better now than it was a couple of weeks ago. Allan |

Does HD make the England team look any better because they look shite in SD.

The recent broadcasting of Trooping of the Colour in HD didn't make the Royal Family appear any more democratic but for £260 you can't expect miracles.
