Hi there,
Before I go out and buy a 50 quid cheapo DVD player (ironic really)... Can someone say what formats on DVD/Cd are supported on my DVD5 ? eg. VCD, SVCD, MP3, MPEG4, Divx, xVid ? Not that I would have any US TV series I desperately need to be catching up on or anything ? Thanks, Roy. |

Mmmmm....just relunctantly spent 25 quid on a Cyberhome DVD player, on the expectations we may not be looking at too many formats.

That's the physical media type of the disc. What about the formats on the disc, ie. from the list above ?

Not tested, but Video CD and Super Video CD are largely included into the DVD spec (each uses MPEG-1 compression), though really poor quality. One could also extend this to MP3 as well (MPEG-1 Layer 3), though support for these is looser on some machines, with restrictions on number of folders and tracks.
Divx and xVid are not supported by enough commercial video distributors to bother with–though perfectly fine for a PC. MPEG-4 is too broad a category to test compatibility for–and, most likey unsupported in shipping players NOT built around a HTPC. |
