I am flying out to Phoenix on Friday to stay in the Scottsdale area for about 10 days. My wife is on a course and I have the task of keeping myself entertained.

If you cannot spend all your time listening to music, get to the Desert Botanical Garden, the Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Globe, the Apache Trail - great drive 21 miles on dirt road thru some desert hills.

In town look out for the Phoenix Art Gallery and the Heard Museum.

Great galleries in Scottsdale to wander thru.

You could also do a quick dash to Jerome, Wickenburg and if you are really keen take a blink at the Grand Canyon.

The scenery was fantastic, the golf courses wonderful and the average daily temp 40 degrees. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and intend going back again next year.

Hi Peter,

I know you have spoken about your liking of Italy, looking at your photo I can fully understand the attraction. As a contrast to all the greenery over 6" high in your photo, here's a shot of the 18th hole at the TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course. It is hard to believe how lush the fairways are given the desert location of the course and the high temperatures. The mountain in the background is called Camelback.

I hear there are rattlesnakes on Phoenix golf courses. They'll try to stay away from people, but if your ball goes off course, who knows what you'll find guarding it....

Have a great time. Oh - don't miss the desert museum, though I prefer the Sonora museum in Tucson, an easy drive from Phoenix. You also should see Sedona.

Hi Phil,

I had a great time playing golf and relaxing around teh Fairmont Princess, but as my wife was tied up with her conference it seemed unfair to do touristy activities without her. To put this to rights, we have booked a fortnight out there next year.

As for the rattlesnakes, I was warned to always take a club with me when looking for a lost ball. I did see one rattlesnake and I beat a hasty retreat. I saw lots of various sized lizards, many groundhogs plus roadrunners and hawks. Not one roadrunner went "meep-meep" though....

The hardest ghing about finding lost balls was the number of range balls around. I guess people just take themn out there and blaze away for the fun of it. Finding a single Titleist in amongst hundreds of range balls is impossible.

I also discovered Jumping Cholla (cactus) and learned wery quickly not to use your hand to pick them off.
