Gareth, since you are on the internet all the time anyway, why now just use the bt or yell on-line facitities. They're free, and you will get a result comensurate with your own ability, rather than that of some guy with dodgy facial hair and 70's running gear. www.bt.com, then 'Go' in the 118 500 Directory Equiries box. www.yell.co.uk

I read in The Daily Telegraph many months ago that this was due to some obscure European Union Directive to deregulate the directory equiries market, and has already been enforced in other member countries. Dunno how much of that is true but it wouldn't surprise me if it was, and nobody wanted any of us phone users to know about. On the other hand it could be a pro-Tory Daily Telegraphy spin story... quote:

I have always been satisfied with the service Maureen gives. 118 212.

I use 118 500 (BT) and have no complaints.
Just don't let 'em connect the call!
Alex; just exactly what sort of service does Maureen provide?

JN A satisfactory one I have no idea whether Maureen is quicker or cheaper than BT or the stupid running men, but the prospect of a burly chap (possibly called Dave) answering the phone as 'Maureen' never fails to raise my spirits. And the adverts are genius. ag

My wife had problems with 118-500 - she was told that the facilty that she wanted to call did not exist (Some health helpline)despite the fact that this helpine was advertised regularly on TV.

I am still trying to work out the deregulation aspect - how do you deregulate something that is free?

It wasn't free: BT (192) had the monopoly.
