Is the iPOD still the "one to get?"

I need a quality player and am considering the Classic Black 80Gb or 160Gb and was intending to listen to WAV files which I believe is possible?

Is it easy to transfer them from my XP PC?

I am aware about the benefit of changing the earphones and intend to do that at some stage in the future.

I hope it is Julian, I've just got one (80Gb Classic) for daughter's birthday tomorrow (to replace Creative Zen which she's had for 3 or 4 years)!!

Other daughter loves hers and finds it exceptionally easy to use - though she is Einstein...

Yes, change earphones. We went for some fairly basic in-ear Senns, which are much better than the included type.

Perhaps they might be persuaded to turn iPod up rather than ask Dad to turn hi-fi down!

I'm a regular user - 80gb classic. Brilliant for a quick music session at lunchtime, holiday, train/air travel, holiday etc. You can use WAV but I think you'll find Apple Lossless as good - way better than the standard Apple Download but doesn't use as much space. However, I couldn't get either WAV Lossless to work on our old XP PC but I understand others use it OK. We've now got an iBOOK and it's just great.

On the subject of phones I bought for £15 a pair of Sennheisers which were far better than the standard Mac issue but I am now so impressed with the Lossless quality i think I am going to get a pair of Shure SE 420s.

Just bought myself the black classic 160GB. Have to say i'm really happy with it - apart from having to copy 400 cd's or so to it - well the Mrs isn't happy BUt it's good to go through your library again.

I opted for the senn mx560's and i'm happy with them considering the price (£18 delivered). They sit in the ear well but there is a lot of sound bleed, so your friends may not be happy.

Also the Mrs has a 2 GB ipod nano and to be honest i think the sound is better from the nano.... TBC

Cover flow, is a great touch. Not all covers are available but most are. I've currently copied 745 songs which equates to 2 days of music - that's one long journey! Also battery life is great.

Also if you find the common library a problem - download LIBRA. You can have multiple libraries, this helps if you want to have different bit rates for each library, and if you have fifferent music tastes

I was waiting for my brother to visit the USA where it would be $'s for £'s but he never went. So i opted for the airport where it cost £195. By far the cheapest i have seen it.

I have a 32GB iPod Touch - and have never had reason to regret the purchase. It holds all the music I need it to - but the killer app is the syncing with Outlook calendar and contacts, and the wifi.

Well I "treated" myself to an ipod at Christmas, It went back about a week later as the sound quality was totally unacceptable. top end bites ya head off and no musical cohesion (and no it was not the headphones). Now have given the ipod a miss and gone for a nokia n95 phone. the sound boogies well to be honest with you. There is some backgound electrical noise but its pretty minor. I think the sony walkman range is pretty special too. Ipods appear to be great at everything apart from playing tunes. terrible.

On the 'proper headphones' front, I can heartily recommend the Sennheiser PX100 (available for around £15 on-line). Excellent sound.

I have a pair, and a friend is on his second pair for his Creative Zen player.

Still using my iRiver H320 for music on the move ,with Sennheiser CX 300 headphones !

Black 160GB Classic with Shure SE530's......kills all noise on flights and I can look down my nose at the Bose bozos with their great clunking noise reduction monsters, knowing that the Shure's sound better, isolate noise better and take up less then 10% of the space in my laptop bag!

Thanks chaps, your feedback is very much appreciated. So much information to absorb about software and headphones though. I had a brief play with BigH47's sons iPod yesterday and really liked its quality and operation (although I did not get to listen to it!)

I have just ordered a Black 160Gb Classic from Amazon for £205. I will upgrade the 'phones soon.....

I am curious why you are the only one with a less than positive experience. Were you using MP3 files?

I run a couple of iPods, and have never had any problem with the sound. In fact with decent file size they are depressingly good when compared to the cost of my domestic hi-fi. At your end of the market (WAV files I mean), I'd push the boat out 'phones wise. Shure E500s are fantastic if you can tolerate their discomfort (I use them for a couple of hours a day), and certainly not mullet on an iPod.

Hi Julian, no I was using apple lossless codec. I was totally mystified too and wrote on the forum for some sympathy. LOL. From research I did I found the latest classic ipod in particular does have reports of inferior sound to older units so maybe that was it. stick ipod sound quality in google and it all comes up. I have to admit, I only use a Gen4 and Gen5, not a Classic, but the Gen5 sounds a s good as my Gen4.

I have the iPOD and have downloaded iTunes and set up an account.

All of my music is already ripped to a hard drive with Windows Media Player in WAV format. I have imported that music into iTunes but it has only carried across the track titles, not artist or album name etc...,

How do I get this information into iTunes because searching through it on the iPOD to try and find particular music is a nightmare.

Hmmm I am sure someone maybe able to give the definitive answer but I thought you only got these details if you ripped with itunes. If you have an MP3 file ripped with something else then unless that embeds the details somehow I am not sure how it would be recovered.
