So, at last, the British Grand Prix fans are going to have a decent circuit to watch F1 at.
Silverstone? Ha ha ha! You just didn't listen to the complaints made by fans. I never could see how they expected fans to pay just to look at the back of advertising hoardings around what looked like the run-down bit of a trading estate in Burnley. Here's to the future! Tony |

Are you suggesting Silverstone is less attractive than Burnley?

Or perhaps Silverstone just mirrors the deterioration in the beauty of a lot of the UK..... Tony |

It should have gone back to Brands

I agree to an extent, but Donington is going to be changed beyond recognition. I'd hate that to happen to Brands. Tony |

Shame it's a motor cycle track. Suits me I won't be going there to watch either. If it don't come back to Brands (and that will never happen) then I won't go to another BGP. Ecclestone will say in a couple of years we shouldn't be racing on a M/C track and drop the BGP which is what he really wants. |

With a bit of luck Bernie will drop dead before that happens.

I ignored this thread at first as I thought it was about the motorcycle GP. Then I saw the news. I'm not that sorry about Silverstone as I never really liked it that much. I third (or fourth?) all the comments about Brands. That was always my favourite circuit for the BGP and I miss it being there.
Not while he still owns part of my football club, please! Mark |

saw bernie interviewed last night and he was saying that silverstone were given a warning 2 years ago that they would lose the bgp unless they improved facilities which according to him they did not do after verious promises. he also went on to say that silverstone can only blame themselves. i think in that case he has a point.
ive a feeling that it will end up back there in years to come. maybe ? |

It may be at the wrong end of the country for me, but Donington is a superb track. Bring it on!
Off camber on the way down the Craner Curves into the old hairpin. It should have happened years ago. I for one am delighted |

and perhaps the teams should be made to use pre-war Auto-Unions on cross-ply tyres to see who really can drive?

And the same drivers would rise to the top, I reckon.

But if BRDC couldn't make a profit out of Silverstone hosting the GP, how will Donnington? As I understand it, all the rights, advertising and such belong to F1, only ticket sales go the the circuit.
And frankly it's a pain in the arse getting in and out of Donnington. Big new roads in place by 1010? I don't think so. And central/local govt. ain't going to pay for it. I think British GP is doomed, to be replaced by Russia/India or some such with a well funded, government backed package, designed to bring attention and focus to their newly rich nation. (And it's always bloody raining in Donnington, even worse than Northampton) |

I loved the description of Silverstone as a community fair masquerading as a world class event!
However, I remain to be convinced that Donnington will ever host a F1 grand prix. Bernie has been touting for govt. money for years and can't get his head around why he can't have it. This is all part of a tactical game to move things forward. The level of investment needed at Donnington far outstrips that would likely be needed at Silverstone or Brands Hatch so, the question is, what is he really up to? Bernie never goes from A to B unless he can make C work for him as well. Mike |

One thing that nobody hasn't mentioned yet is the track surface at Donington. The flights overhead leave the track with a certain slipperiness. Worse in the rain!
Not that a little rain got in the way of the 1993 European GP, when I was lucky enough to see Senna go from 6th to 1st on the first lap. The only driver to get his discs glowing down the Craner Curves too! Tony |
