So sorry to here of your loss, this is always a worry to Mrs A & myself as we have a Basset hound, and they are prone to this.

Hi, it seems not. We were warned by our vet, never to feed him on dried food due to fast expansion of it when he has a drink. We feed him on tinned food but give him his daily quoater in two halves i,e half in the morning and the second half late afternoon. This has worked so far (fingers crossed), he is now 12.5 years old. Regards, Chris N |

Sorry to hear this.
Try not to beat your self up over this. I speak as vet who treats one or 2 a year. Gastric dilatation and torsion happens so quickly anyway, a lot depends on the skills of your veterinary surgeon. Even then it carries very high mortality rates. Still a lot is unknown regarding the etiology. Among the risk factors are large deep chested breeds nervous temperament activity after eating, ( I never exercise dogs for 5 hours after feeding, ie I only feed them at night) dry foods. The prevalence is so high in US Great Danes it is advocated to do a preventative gastropexy. (surgical procedure) Warning signs include unproductive attempts to vomit restlessness drooling saliva abdominal pain abdominal enlargement |

Thanks for that David,Our hounds two 9 yr old (one of which died) & a 4 yr old) are fed twice a day a mixture of dry&tinned food ,they are not allowed out for at least an hour/half to Two hours before or after feeding.
unfortunately we have some building work going on & I think they may been let out among the coming & going ......Jim |

So sorry to learn of your sad loss Blueknowz. We all get so attached to our dogs & one feels so helpless when they're ill.
