Thanks for that.

Thought for a minute I was going to have to pay for it.

I think it's kind of fitting having a titular Head of State on an island - don't you guys?

Isn't this what Paul Burrell now claims to have seen according to today's papers?!!

Dear Dom,

And clearly since 1945 much less damaging to world affairs!

But even so a tremendous source of basic stability, which a democratically elected Parliament [and certainly an elected executive President] does not guarantee. I would say the our Monarchical Head of State is rather good value, howevver it is looked at, though I might sympathise with Deane if he would prefer the NZ did not share ours! That does seem an anachronism to me.

In 2004 (last year I can find reliable figures) the civil list was £36.7m.

Dear Mark,

I have seen several familly females in the buff. It was accidental in each case, and was followed by a swift cool sharp Harp. [Exit from the room in other words!

My brother once had a fuel filter blockage on a tractor whilst rotavating for a swede seed bed, and went to the house only to catch my father and his future third wife entirely naked in the act of sexual communion. I suspect these things do happen, but it says something about the Mail that they think it is remarkable!

But there have been some pretty poor character choices among Royal Servants! It is not anyone's business what the Butler saw in my view, and Paul [who] is already shown as a teller of untruths, so even if it's true is it fairly discredited.

One day we shall share a beer, I hope! G

Now look at what the US spends on the President, and past Presidents etc. If you look at it on a like for like basis it's a lot cheaper! I seem to remember reading £2 per tax-payer per year recently, I can live with that, at least the Queen serves a useful purpose as a diplomat, tourist attraction etc.

You're welcome here for a drink or twelve anytime you're in Yorkshire George!

Iceland is a republic and spends a lot less on its president than we do on Royalty. If you look at it on a like for like Royalty is a lot dearer!

I don't mind the Queen (she was good on Spitting Image), but it's all those hangers-on.

If it is £2 a head every year then can I have mine back (she wouldn't miss the odd £100 surely) as well as all that money Gordon Brown has taken from me - then I can retire.
