OK, so I have CDS, 52, Supercap, snaxo, hicap, 2x250s, active sbls.

I also have an older naim pre/power/psu too and a pair of kef R104.2s

Since I am getting a nice video projector box for the listening room, I'd like to hook up a dolby 5.1 system which uses the big naim system for the front and the naim/kef for the rear (not ideal, i know, but its here...)

Obviously I'd like to do this in a way that doesnt intrude into my existing 52/supercap etc experience.

So..... I want a some sort of a dolby digital decoder box, hopefully with its own volume control for the DVD player, which can output volume controlled line level for the front and rear and drive just the center speaker from its own amp.

Kindof like a dts decoder, volume control, then line level breakouts, and a 5 channel amp of which i'll use one. (Or a box with no amps and I'll use half a stereo amp for the center).

Any ideas on this?

Any sign of the such a box coming from Salisbury itself?

Jon

Hi folks.

Interesting thread. I've currently got an Arcam 10DAVE/10P3 system which I'd like to keep to use for AV, although I am thinking of a move to Naim for music. Thing is, I want to be able to use the Naim kit within the larger AV picture, i.e. taking the DAVE pre-outs for the L+R channels into the back of the (say) 72 pre-amp. Do any of the inputs have the option of by-passing the volume stage (as this would be controlled by the Arcam master volume).

Everything else (LP12 and CD) would go directly into the Naim preamp.

Secondly, will any such connection compromise the musical integrity of the Naim amps?

There is no way to bypass the volume. Your only realistic option is to put the pre-outs from your A/V pre-amp into one of the input channels on your Naim pre-amp. Then when you want to listen to home theatre, change the input on your Naim pre-amp to the AV signal, and set the volume to a pre-determined "fixed" level on the Naim pre-amp.

This level will probably be quite high, so that your A/V pre-amp has some headroom. I suggest that you take know of the loudest that you would ever listen with a CD, then set the Naim pre-amp volume to a recognizable (e.g. 12 o'clock) level. You can use the setting in your A/V pre-amp to specify how loud your front channel speakers are in relation to the rest of the system.

I figured that I would have to do this myself, but I've purchased a house now and the listening room is in a different place than the HT room. That really is your best option, if it's at all possible. Catch you later!

Now that's what I call really quite interesting.

Paul - when you say "box" do I take it you mean 5 series style?

...This is the news I'm looking for!

Any hints as to how much the 5.1 preamp is likely to cost? I should liberate £1600 or so for the 10DAVE plus 10P/3 as trade-in. Hopefully I could be up and running with an all-Naim setup for not too high an outlay!

Thanks for the update on the Naim way forward! Looking forward to buying another 4 NAP500s to replace my Arcam AV amp.

wink

BTW Paul, what is the best of the compression systems from a sound point of view. I know that JV hated Dolby Pro Logic because it was so "lossy". I guess DTS is better, but the disks are rarer than rocking horse ...

Paul--

I have only two requests:
1. Make it a part of the 5 Series.
2. Don't pull a Linn and make it be better than the 52 (the Linn processors linestage is better than the Kairns).

Oh--and make if quasi affordable !

Cheers,

Bob

Paul-

What's an "AP"?
(better than a VAP or SAP, I guess)

I'll take a guess at "Audio Processor." Or perhaps it's "Attaboy Paul!" Catch you later!
