I’ve been offered a s/h pair favorable. How would they go with CD3/72/140 ?
Or can my Nait 3 swing them ? I’m most worried about bas boom because the room haven’t competed with ported speaker’s so far. How far should they go from wall ??? I’ve had experience with Royd Saphire 5 year’s ago in another room (very exiting speaker) Per. |

Per,
Your Nait3 should work fine as the Royd is a very easy load and reasonably efficient. The 72/140 combo would kick butt. Bass boom should not be a problem if you can get the siting correct as the Abbotts are a tad lightish in the bottom end as far as heft goes tho bass reach is pretty good. Ideally, you should have them well away from the sidewalls(min.60cm) and from 35 to 70cm from the back wall with a bit of toe in. If you liked the speed, immediacy and coherency of the Sapphires, you'll love the Abbotts. |

I've just seen them, but they are set up for bi-wire and there is no connection between these.
Can I use a simple single solid core to get connection or should I look out for the original Royd connection ? Per |

The Nait3 will drive the Abbots fine, no problem there. Of course the 72/140 will be even better.
Ideally, you'll want to get some Naim speaker wire to "short" the biwire terminals. There are more exotic options of course, but this will be the easiest and probably best sounding too. |

Actually, the Abbots seem to like more power than the rest of Royd's line-up (including the Albions). However, a 140 is actually a pretty good amp, and it did a great job with my Albions. (I'm using a 250 now, which is, of course, on a different level altogether.) I notice that you don't have a Hi-Cap on your 72; without that, the 140 will probably struggle with the Abbots.
Also, you can't really use your experience with the Saphires, as they are a very different monkey (standmounted versus floorstanding). The same sense of excitement is there, but the load factor is entirely different. The bass will seem somewhat soft and undefined. Finally, I've tried experimented with driving the Abbots using a Cambridge A500. They didn't sound "bad", but when we increased the amplification to a good Exposure integrated (I can't remember the model right now), then difference was amazing. Ultimately, my best advice is to try to listen to them with your own gear. Only that will enable you to make the best decision. Catch you later! -=> Mike Hanson <=- Smilies do not a forum make. |

Thanks for that Mike. Are the Abbots less sensitive than the other Royd speakers?

Although the basic sensitivity rating for the Abbot is roughly the same as the rest of Royd's line-up, this number is almost meaningless. It measures the amount of sound generated at a certain frequency in a certain type of room. In Royd's case, I think they tweak these number a bit, because they want the numbers to represent "in room sensistivity". I usually ignore that rating and try it for myself.
I'm basing my own comments on the Abbot on my experience, and that of a fellow Royd fan (Robert Fulton of Advantage Hi-Fi here in Toronto). The Abbot sounds a little closed in without sufficient amplification. Perhaps it's that big woofer (the biggest in the Royd line-up). Also, the Abbot takes "forever" to break in; I've heard that six months is not unusual, where one month is usually enough with the rest of their line. The only true measure, of course, is to try them with your own gear in your own space. Catch you later! -=> Mike Hanson <=- Smilies do not a forum make. |

There is a Royd forum on http://64.70.137.136/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi. It's woefully neglected - please use it . Your system is the same as mine - I love the abbots but understand that the 180 and hi-cap are the next option . Incidentally , my naim dealer loves them but won't stock them as they are too ugly , which is the same reason why I never made it as a rock star. Cheers.

Tony, They are Kan MK1, absolutely wonderfull speaker, though I know that an uncapped 140 and Nait 3 is not muscular enough, I keep them for a 180 or 250.
