JC,

As your using vinyl, I would go for the pre-amp with the best phono input. Thats the 72 I beleive.

The Nait 2 is a fine amp and a good start, the 62/140 will give you more of everythin. A little like looking through a biger picture. The 72 will give you even more.

Given the choice I would go for the 72/140 and start saving for a hi-cap to put in between them both.

Regards

NB

Hi JC,

one point to note - as a 62-hi-110 user for many years - my experience was, if you are using the MC boards in the pre-amp, it makes the pre-amp VERY fussy on location - I found the sound was very squashed and flat, unless the 62 was at least 15 inches away from anything with mains-level power in it! (including LP12 motor, armageddon, hicap, 110 and the old NAD CD player I had at the time)...

Other than that I still have my 62 as a fall-back for my 52. Its a long time since I listened to any Nait, and my feeling was I wouldn't ever bother (duck and run for cover!).

The 72 ought to be great and a bit up from the 62 but I suspect only if you have a hicap, as the 72 may reveal the power supply limitations inherent in the on-board 140 preamp supply - even more so than the 62.

Good luck
Chris

NB,
thanks for the advice. BTW, I don't relly need a phono input, since I have the linto, which ouputs a line level signal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again but I believe the Nait 2, when partnered with fine sources and sensitive speakers of a certain type (~90dB/4 ohm-ish), has the capability to give even a 52 a good run for its money.

However, Kans aren't that easy a load and so I reckon the poweramp characteristics will swing it.

A really good combination is LP12/P75/Nait 2/Royd Doublets. Good enough for me!

John

PS. Not that the Doublets have displaced the Virgos, but if the right offer came along for the Virgos I would sell them, as though they're better, like the Nait 2 versus 52, I can live with the cheaper speakers and a couple grand in the bank...

regardless of the phono stage issue you will find the 72/140 combination is way superior musically to your other choices especially as the 72 is in fact an upgraded 62.
what about a 112x/150x? which i think is one of the best combinations(VFM)naim has ever built.

Funny,
i thought the 72 was an upgraded 32 and the 62 was an upgraded 42...

I find this interesting but wonder if I would be in that camp, allready prefer the older Naits to the later, and fully aggree with Topcat, the Nait 2 gives higher hiearchy " a good run for its money"

As a long time user of a 62, a 72, and an 82, I found the 62/140 far more satisfying than the 72/140.

The 72 without a hicap makes strings, brasses, winds, and percussion sound as if they're elecrically amplified. This is fine if all you listen to is rock, but if you listen to a wider range of music than that, the 72 needs a hicap.

Of course, a 62/hi/140 is lots more satisfying than a 62/140, and a 72/hi/140 is a lot better still.

Regards.

That's not what I've heard with my 72/180... Cellos sound like cellos to me on it. Well, a facsimile of one, but certainly not the way you mean...

Mind you, I've moved up from a NAIT3 so am still in luuuuurve with the 72, so might be listening through rose-tinted ears Smile

72/hicap/140 would be ideal for an LP12/Ekos/Troika, its a combination I initially ran with Ruark Sabres and then SBL's; very musical.

My LP12/Ittok/K18 -> 62s/140 -> Kans Mk I was a great combo.
My current CDX -> 82+2xHi -> 250 -> Kans Mk I betters it in some ways, but not all.
