Chaps,

Has anyone here tried a set of these supertweeters with a Naim system, if so, what results did you get?

I played with a pair about 6 months ago, and rather liked the effect. For me, seemed to have no effect on how any instrument sounded, but improved positioning of where instruments were in the mix. I guess you could call it "adding definition and believability"

Any thoughts?

I tried a set from Tannoy on home demo for a week: http://www.tannoy.com/frame.cfm?ID=1&D=1

I agree they made a small change to the overall sound. There has been some press claiming that super tweeters change the perceived sound across a wide range of frequencies including apparent strengthening in the bass and mid band presentation.

I did not notice much of that but to be fair I have a pair of REL subs which do pretty much the same from the "bottom up" rather than the "top down". Since I was already hearing a lift in the complete sound with the subs it was probably too much to expect more by adding on super tweeters. I did try disconnecting the subs and felt I got more out of the musical presentation with the subs than with the super tweeters.

I guess the other factor with Naim is the bandwidth of the amps. They are'nt designed to generate a lot of super sonic frequencies (none of these 100 KHz claims made by some). Maybe that reduces the output the super tweeters are capturing. The fact that the prime frequencies are inaudible and that what we hear is presumably audible harmonics adds to the strangeness of this whole thing.

To me, your response infers that the effect was created was "so what", and that the money would have been better used elsewhere (e.g. another hicap).
Is that about right?

If you are listening with CD as source then there is no output above that which is reproduced by your existing tweeters.

If you are using vinyl, SACD or DVD-A sources, then that's a different matter (although current SACD players seem to roll off the upper frequencies much earlier than the first generation of players).

cheers, Martin

YES,

But you claimed youi heard "something". Was it worth the money ? I get the impression you thought not!
As with all HiFi it has to be an idividual judgement based on demo.

On paper you are right. One of the reasons I was interested to try Supertweeters was because I have SACD & DVD-A. The suppliers claim they CAN add to the sound and enjoyment of CD, partly because they are typically set to roll in at frequencys from 14 to 16 Khz, BUT see my answer above.
