Hello,

I have the LP 12/ Aro/ Armageddon/ Prefix "k" with dynavector cartridge.
Is the Prefix type "k" is the perfect matching for the cartridge? or the type "s" should be the best option?
Any listening experience between the two types?
How critical is it in my case?

Regards

Arik

It is likely that a Dynavector cartridge will work best with "S" Prefix. When you are trying to find one, see if you can get the later model with the RF upgrade, apparently they sound slightly better. Either way, make sure you get one with a black captive Snaic.

The fully upgraded S Prefix was available from s/n 192450.

Cheers, Julian

Yes,

Absolutely S for a Dynavector. I also went from K to S with a TK RUA and it was better, better. I latter put my Prefix in an outboard aluminium box and used the normal arm lead. I found that was also an improvement against all thoughts about the short connection??

I had a K when I got a TK Rua and it sounded strange. An S was much better but I not as good as the Dynavector P75 I ended up with.

Rega 1 , I have just bought a 2001 prefix s for my Linn fitted with a 10x5 and it works superbly , much better than the internal boards on the 52 . Some will tell you that this will not work but it does . One word of warning though , I am quite surprised at how much powering the prefix from the 52's supercap affects the performance of the 52 on the rest of the inputs .

I was told that "N" was the way to go with a Rega P3, dynavector 10x5.

A 10x5 is a high output MC so yes.. N is the right stage for it.

Of course an N is the way to go if you are using a stageline but to my knowledge there is no N prefix . I will be changing the cartridge in a year or so to a low output MC but the S prefix does work with a 10x5 far better than the internal MM boards .

Peter,

As I understood, the type of the prefix depends on the cartridge's technical data(output voltage, I guess?).
Could some one please give a professional information, which/ what kind of
technical data suits each kind of the prefix types? and which cartridge to choose to which type?

Regards

Arik

Arik,

K = Linn Moving Coils and the Lyra's sound ok too (all low output MC)

S = Pretty much any other Low output MC like Dynavector, Audio Technica, Benz, Ortofon etc.

Hope this helps you.

Kind regards,

Peter

Longman,

using a 10x5 into an S or K type board (whether Prefix or Stageline) is overloading the phono stage by an order of 10. You should not do this and the sound should be pretty awful. Your MM boards should be a much better match, which leads me to believe you do not have MM boards in your 52.

Frank.
