Hi All
I've got the CDX2 back on home dem, my final one now!! If anyone glanced at my previous posts you'll know that i've been 'hummin & haarin' between CD5x/CDX2. When i had the 5x at home though i was "missing" the CDX2 too much

I'm now demming it with the 112x/150x & so far it's just fantastic. Whether the Naim amp combo is any better than my Copland i'm not entirely sure, i'll be A/B'ing at the weekend. What i definitely do know is that it's GOT to be the CDX2, you guys where right! Wink

yeah I had upgraded to my 150 and was impressed with the punch but then I finally got the CDX2 last year and it is all together wonderful. Now for the XPS I hear so much about.

Life is analogue

Keep the CDX2 for about a week and watch it CHANGE even more (for the better). I had a previous thread where I questioned the concept of warm up and many on this forum agreed that Naim gear being unplugged for 30 minutes or more (ie the time it took for the CDX2 to leave your dealer and arrive at your home) was the equivalent to having to start the warm up period all over again from scratch.

Bev,

The CDX2 no contest. I only have a CDX but I remember it blowing away the old 3.5 even when cold. As a rule I never switch off CD players or amps as they defo sound better when warm! When a CD is switched off if only for a few mins it will take a good week to settle down again.

I only have and older Nait3 at the mo but am suprised at what it does for the little I paid for it. I only say this because I was using a Lavardin IS Ref CDX combo which is rather good at any price!

Thanks all for your replies

Now living with the amp combo (112x/150x) i don't think it's any better than my Copland, it's just different. I think it might be that i do like a tube sound; the Copland is a hybrid.

So the final analysis is YES to the CDX2 & almost certainly no to the 112x/150x.

Does anyone have any thoughts on a good tube amp (integrated or combo). Anyone used Audio Research?

Thanks again
Bev

Bev.

What do you mean by 'good'?

I like Audio Research preamps ( either ref one or two are excellent ) but I am not too keen on their amplifiers. They provide adequate power for normal speakers but slow going and veiled.

How much power do you need?
I really haven't came acrossed a 'good' tubed integrated. I mean they are good in terms of dynamics and stage and all, but most of 'em just can't dance.

oh.. one more thing on ARC gear, they use far too many tubes so, be prepared come retubing time! ( and it is a pain in the arse to bias 'em )

Well the final decision is: CDX2 but not the 112x/150x.

While the 112x/150x combo was good it didn't beat my Copland after a/b'ing. The Copland v Naim combo are 'different' rather than better

I'll keep the Copland for a while longer; i've had tube amps in the past (the Copland is a hybrid) and think i might try the tube route again, it has something i like!

Does mentioning tubes mean i'll get 'kicked out' of the forum ?

Has anyone ever tried EAR Yoshino amps, particularly the 834 int.

Thanks
Bev

Audio Research is the most overrated stuff on the market. They have gone through a number of internal changes and the "ears" of the company have changed. A silvery, "hi fi" type sound is endemic...antithesis of Naim. No balls, no fun...like a butterfly under glass instead of real butterfly. Perfect for equipment heads who don't listen to music. You can do much better, especially at the prices they charge. I'd rather listen to an old Eico kit, or a Woodside RAdford, or Copland or Canary etc. OR....Naim or DNM.

So the final analysis is YES to the CDX2 & almost certainly no to the 112x/150x.

Yeah..I forgot EAR. Stuff I've heard from them is a thousand times more musical than most Audio Research crap.

Indeed, some do. ( not all ) Wink
Actually, there are similarities between few Naim components and valves, particularly single-ended triode types. Unfortunately, the flavor you like ( and I like ) is costly and rare from solid state kit.

So far, they haven't kicked me out, Bev. I own a pair of SET monoblocks. See my profile. Safe to say you'll be ok. Wink

A friend of mine own one. I haven't heard it. But it is a pain to retube. Think really hard if you really want to be dealing with 12 valves. Big Grin
I found EAR to be rather inconsistent in voicing unit to unit. It uses EL34 output valves, so expect somewhat sweet and softish sound. How much balls it would have, I don't know.

FYI, when you consider valve amps, it is more critical to match speaker load to the amplifiers.
