As I said a few posts up.

I actually converted standard height Fraim levels by buying just the tall spacers and bolts which Naim will supply on request. It saved quite a lot of money over buying complete fraim layer kits.

Nigel and I have discussed the short vs tall layer thing before. We differ a bit.

I had short layers and test listened with them then converted them to tall and listened again. No degradation audible. Peter "C" commented that it's swings and roundabouts IHO. Basically the reasoning was more coupling points due to more spikes into cups with the short layers is probably a drawback which cancels the slight loss of ridgity with the taller layers.

However I have no idea how the heavy 555 changes the equation so best to be cautious and do the test.

regards
Geoff

Over the weekend, a friend showed up with a Nikon D200 and took this system photo.
I see what an expensive camera and a lens do!

Finally on System 4/Fraim/SL2.
I hope the journey on the Naim upgrade path ends here…

Hmm, no offence but personally I much prefer the looks and colour of Miller's cherry/black Fraim setup.

If I would/could buy me a Fraim, I think it'd be a maple/black version.
(too bad Naim don't make a light-oak version Roll Eyes )

cheers, Alco

It’s cherry and it’s supposed to darken by the time, my SL2’s are cherry as well and are much darker.

Cheers Martin

For myself (and it's all personal taste!) I prefer the cherry/metal (aluminium? stainless steel?) as shown in Kuma's.

To me, all black is a bit '1980s' the decade of the ubiquitous black ash...

The mixture of colours/tones seems a bit more contemporary (this coming from an all-olive owner, of course...!)

The cherry certainly will darken. My ProAc D15s certainly have - and these days taking off the grills reveals an untanned finish underneath, 'a la bikini'.

The problem with black Fraim is that pictures just don't do justice to it and don't show how good and classy it looks Cool
This was a problem for me as I ordered it blind, but it was such a good surprise when I got it Smile
I think anyway that the Fraim is a piece of furniture and has to match the room to look good, therefore it would be nice to have a wider choice of colours...

Edouard

Beautiful setup, Miller.

I really like the look of your cherry/black Fraim - actually SWMBO prefers it to my cherry/silver rack...

As a commited lover of maple I have to admit that those black fraims do look awfully nice.

Like chameleon hiding in shadows...

Adam, Mike, Derek, Fredrik, Geoff, Edouard, Hungrihalibut, Martin,

I just ordered an additional standard Fraim shelf unit after having asked for advice at Naim headquarters. Their opinion went clearly in this direction. Special thanks to Adam!

Christian

Hello all,

I couldn't resist posting this picture of my friends system.

It consists of CDS3/555PS, NAC42.5(!), SUPERCAP2, NAP300 and PMC AB2's.

It sounds bloody marvelous!

Sorry for the low rent image, it was taken on a 'phone.

I agree, It would be good if there were one or two more finishes like oak for example, available and I agree with your point that pictures don't seem to do them justice.

Alco, as Andy says......just ask nicely, you never know! I've supplied mahogany, black in the past Cool

Regards,

Peter

I haven't asked Naim, but even if they could provide a custom-made light-oak Fraim, there are 2 reasons for me not to buy:

1. I don't think my system is up to it yet.
(having only 2 component, and I'd like to have at least a 3-shelve Fraim.

2. I assume a custom-made light-oak version (being not standard) will be even more absurdly priced than the already 2100,- costing euro! (price just raised, 2 months ago)

regards,
Alco

Bloody hell, Yoda.

I had this vision of you having not only a super-dooper system but on something at least as expensive as Fraim!

Instead your racks are....about as expensive as mine..! Razz
