Glad you like the shot sound_dust
Alan, the speakers are by Focal JMLab - they're Chorus 716S's. I used to have (for 17 years) Kef K160's, and wanted something under a grand that could be a step up on these, would sound good with a 112X/150X combo, still do the business on a 202/200, and liveable with 252/250 in the future until the wallet recovered sufficiently to replace the speaker package. As it's an AV kit (centre is a Chorus CC700S, rears are Chorus 705S'S) I don't really fancy the expense of a speaker change again till I've climbed the mountain. Would adore a Focal Electra setup, but you're looking £10k for a 5.1 system, maybe more. Using an old REL Qbass sub, but looking to add a 2nd sub with extravagant plans. The old sub will run speaker level from the centre ( giving me full range - YUM!) and the new one will do LFE in 5.1, but also run line level from my Hicap to supplement the floorstanders on 2 channel listening. Just need to find another Qbass to run speaker level on the rears bringing them up to spec.... |

I have a Qbass myself that i use for A/V. Have you tied it with the main speakers for hifi use?

I ask as i have never been able to set the Qbass up with hifi speakers without it slowing the sound (the sub can't keep up with the other speakers).

It was a kit that I modify. It was a kit with an extra passive woofer and a much bigger volume. I left that passieve unit away and produce a smaller case. So not totaly designed by my self but alittle. I did it also with this one: The A4 MK III I'm now listening for the evening and it is for already better than the eVe's ( see in the link ) Not the big bass but transparant and depth in the sound. It's a real sound. |

Your new DIY speakers look good indeed, Robbert!
The only pair I once build was the VIFA Korrekt 3.0 (it was about 19 years ago, and I remember they also sounded great, even on my modest NAD3020 amp.) greetings, Alco |

The Qbass has always been set to run via my DD processor... its' rollof is set to max so that it can handle all the LFE info, and my current x-over points are 60hz for the front 3 channels, and 80hz for the rears. When the 2nd sub appears then the Qbass will be hooked in parallel to the centre channel via a high level speaker to XLR. I'll then carefully balance the rollof and volume to match the centre channel. The sub may be slower, but I reckon it'll add more than it loses me to do this. The new sub has separate RCA Stereo and RCA LFE inputs. The LFE will be hooked up to the processor. The processor will be set to deliver bass below 80Hz from the rears down this alongside LFE. In the meantime I'll run a line level custom cable from my Hicap to the RCA stereo inputs. These have their own X-over, so will be able to set the sub to take over from the 47Hz rolloff point of my Chorus 716S's. This means that in pure 2 channel and 5.1 alike my stereo pair will be running "full range", and in 5.1 I'll get more articulate low frequencies from the centre channel. Ideally a third sub paired to the rears (in similar fashion to the Qbass on the centre) will get me a step closer to emulating the holy grail of 5 full range speakers plus a sub dedicated to LFE... not quite, but a lot closer than most 5.1 packages would ever get |

So birdie62, did you win a lotery? Looks nice your set.

Gorgeous setup, but why's the 552/555 pair so close to the 500..... surely you'd yield a sizeable benefit from separating them?
Bloody jealous though! |

I wish I had won a lotery!!! No, I'm a civil servant, so I work hard for my money Robbert, you should visit Indonesia! There, all lamps wear these hats. Naim gear will be more difficult to find, I guess! But they have Gamelan instead! Cheers, Christian |

There comes no radiation of any kind from the 555, 552 or the 500, so I see no problem stacking them this way. Electromagnetic radiation spreads vertically, not horizontally, and the power-supplies are located on the side of the 555/552/500, not on top of or under. Mr Administrator or any expert from Naim, please correct me if I'm wrong, so that I could replace the low fraim element under the 555 by a high one! The problem is worth being elucidated, I want the maximum from my system!!! Christian |

Several people have experienced significant improvements by having an empty shelf between a CDS3 and a 552 head unit and then another empty shelf between the 552 and the 500 amp.
Whether this practice applies to the CD555 I do not know - but it may well be worth checking out. Increasing the height of the CD player does also make it easier to operate - groveling in front of a CD player is so undignified. |
