Time for an update. These arrived yesterday:-
I've historically had a bit of trouble with the appearance of the SL2's, but a home dem did the trick. Dee-flippin-lightful. My Allaes had become seriously outclassed by the CD555, 552 and 300. Many thanks to Alastair and Andy of 'Signals' for their excellent friendly service, and an extended home dem of the SL2's. John. |

John, try sliding the 555 to the front of the glass shelf and see what you think (hear). Repeat with other components.
Chris Murphy did this when doing a 555/552/500/SL2 demo in our store recently and the difference wasn't subtle. For us downunder all naim components are now prefered this way on a Fraim. Cheers Rick. |

if you remove the dust, the soundstage will collapse..... |

Can you please explain more. How far to the front - as far as it can go? There's very little room to move. Steve |

I have always had mine right at the front - line up the front edge of the boxes with the front edge of the glass. It hides the magic dust too!! Nigel |

Nigel That's it? I wonder how that improves the sound - something to do with resonancing vibratory nodal frequency impedence deadening, I suppose. But the magic dust hiding is a big plus, so to the front my boxes go! Steve |

That's very probably it, but only when the wind is in the east!! But to me it simply looks much better when everything lines up. I'm a bit anally retentive like that. Nigel |

Nigel, Do you also have the pre-amp lined up to the front of the Fraim glass?- wouldn't the voume contol then overhang? Thanks Nick |

Yep..good Fraim practice, standing looking down from above, edge of case coincident with front shelf edge, coincident with wooden shelf edge below...adjust carefully
Knobs allowed to overhang...Oh Errr! Reason why I do it....Well when you have a 500 you find the bloody great heatsink sticking out the back and the hausers supplying power pretty much force you to put it as far forward as poss on the glass shelf....Once you have done that you get all anal about it just like Nigel and have to have all the others the same... Does it make any difference to the sound.....I have no idea. ....but it hides the audio dust round the back instead regards Geoff |

Y'see Geoff, that's why you should trade down to a 300 and get less demanding speakers - obvious innit!

The difference we heard between having the 555 (or any naim player I presume) lined up with the front edge of the glass rather than sitting evenly spaced between the ball bearings is focus. The tops sounded a lot smoother as well.
It's an easy experiment to try, especially with the players that have metal feet, just slid em back, listen, then slid em to the front. There's no contest. |

Indeedy. Sticking out knobs are fine. Easier to grab when you are a bit myopic. Nigel |

Nick, have you sexed the glass? i.e right way up and right way round 180 degress.

C'mon, it's a free tweak, what could be better?

I know it sounds potty and I rolled my eyes over it as well, but it does make a difference. Try it, after all it costs nothing but time. Yo-yo Master Tapping the glass once in place as per Martin Paynes Fraim setup procedure is a start. Sometimes it's easy to hear and on some shelves it's not, so listening is the best way. Your system will just sound more 'together' with the glass the right way up. Once this is determined, repeat by listening and rotating 180 degress to find the right way round. Each shelf must be done. I would never set up a Fraim without going through this procedure after hearing the improvement it brings. Cheers Rick. |
