I know Linn no longer support them, but as I understand it, they usually fail because the electrolytic capacitors start to leak, so why can't they simply be replaced. This would be an easy enough job for a competent electronics guy.
Am I missing something? |

Perhaps its just not economically viable for linn to do it. After all they are pretty simple components and I was not aware they still made them.
The result is they would have to charge you a fair wack for staff costs and you would feel pissed off, because its a simple device. On the other hand if you know someone handy with a soldering iron. |

Milo,
They can be but not by Linn. There is a company called Class A that does various repairs etc and Darran there is a very affable chap. He will look at repair and a fairly chick turnaround. Try here Class A He did mine once. Alternatively some dealers have stock of new or unused Vallhalla boards but last time I asked the price was too high. I bought an indepenent external PS instead. ClassA also sell the Herules PS for the LP12 which is supposed to be good. You could always save for a Lingo or 'geddon! Regards Milan Regards Milan |

The Valhalla's pretty complex I have no idea how it works, but I can solder and know enough basis electronics. I change the electrolytic caps every few years before they fail. It's very easy just make absolutely sure they are oriented correctly and are the right values. Next time I'm in there I'll replace those 2 wirewound toasted looking resisters as well. Hardest part is getting the board off the clips. If you have a failed board I'd have someone shotgun all the caps before sending off for expensive service or throwing it out. Oh yeah - unplug it first, and then unplug it again :-)

It's almost always easy to fix them but it's not always the three capasitors that fail it kan also be the rectifier and a resistor and fuse and maby there was something more that gives up. I have also seen valhallas with logic circuits that has gone to component heaven wich can be harder too replace in one board i have looked at i couldn't find a replacment chip.
But I haven't seen a board with green capacitors that hasn't leaked. |

Whay can't Valhallas be repaired?
Because they weren't built by Naim. (Had they been, they'd need less maintenance to start with!) Claude |

Many thanks Milan This is exactly the sort of contact I was looking for. My Valhalla is about 23 now and I no longer have a large enough vinyl collection to justify a big spend when it gives out. All the best, Milo |

I think Linn are a disgrace when it comes to stopping support for 'older' products.
The laser packed in on my seven year old Karik CD player (cost approximately £1500) and I was told bad luck. I also had a Numerik (off board DAC, cost over £1000) that obviously partnered the Karik well but might not have worked well/at all with a different CD player. All's well that ends well - my CDX2/XPS2 is a huge improvement. |

Linn aren't the only company that can't repair lasers on older CD players!

An alternative to Valhalla board is the Hong Kong developped "Hercules II", exactly the same size and offers both 33 & 45 rpm facility.
Never tried, price approx. 145 pounds. Have a search on e-bay for more. Just my 0,5 euro, have a happy new year. Jacques |

Thanks Milan for the recommendation. I still repair lots of valhallas, usually there are 11 components to change. The Hercules is a definate improvement though... Or if funds allow, upgrade to an Armageddon.... |

But Bob, it wasn't an old CD player. |

i can't see why the valhalla boards couldn't be repaired... you can still order the necessary spare parts from Linn - can't you?

Can you remove the board from the deck?
If so, send it to me and I'll gladly replace the caps for you. This is a 10 minute job and I'd be happy to do it for the cost of parts and postage.

That's very kind of you Rob, but it's not actually failed yet. When I had the deck set up by Peter 11 months ago it was functioning just fine, but at 23 it probably hasn't got that long to go. I'm just checking out my options for when it does. |
