Hi,
There have been various threads extolling the virtues of Welsh slate as a base for equipment and speakers. I have been looking around with something to help my Linn Ninkas perform on my rather springy wooden floor. As a result of a recent holiday I have found something which gives bass precision and more depth and leaves the treble sweet. If you are on holiday near St Davids I suggest you go a mile outside and treat yourself. Prices per slab – cut square with a natural wife-pleasing finish – are variable, but I came away with hefty squares for £6 each – cheaper and sonically better than Tesco chopping boards. Hugh Salmon runs a family business at Pont y Brenhin, Rehodiad y Brenhin, St David’s. I explained what they would be used for, “Oh yes,” he said sympathetically, “I had one of you people in a couple of years ago.” NB I have no commercial connection with Mr Salmon. This is not an advertisement. Have fun. Don This message has been edited. Last edited by: Adam Meredith, ![]() |

I must have missed those ..... I'm glad you said This is not an advertisement because it looked just like one to me. Oh well, I'm not the brightest poster on the forum. |

Tried slate tiles (from a different source but look the same) under Kabers. Tightened the bass a tad but hardened the sound unacceptably and threw the timing out completely. Theyre in my garden now - supporting pots and utterly forgotten until I read this thread! The tiles, that is, not the Kabers. They have found a happy home elsewhere. In Wales, actually.

Hi, If you use "find" you will find various references to Welsh slate. This is no more an advertisement than the discussion about using Tesco chopping boards for speaker stands, or using LP12s to play records. I included this information because it might be of value to other hifi enthusiasts. I will not argue with your third premise however. Pip pip Don |

The main difference is you give a price, full address and telephone number.
I see nothing wrong with discussing the virtues of Welsh slate in equipment supports. |

Yes "ROTF", I thought long and hard about giving Mr Salmon's address, and decided it would be of more value if I did so. If I commend Tesco or Linn products, we all know where to go to buy them. It is therefore not necessary to give any more information beyond the endorsement. (Which is advertising??) Unhappily Mr Salmon is not as well known. At least not yet! Or should I simply say - "I know a good place in Wales to get slate, but I am not going to tell you!" Come on "ROTF" there are bigger dragons out there to slay. Over and out Don Phillips |

Have you tried them? Granted not as cheap but they work just fine. And cheaper for me than travelling all the way to Wales. |

I have tried them Chris. In my system they brought about a great improvement. The slate seems a bit better though. But all systems, floors and rooms vary. Don |

I tried granite slabs for 1 day, and then I made my own blocks. The bass was so mushy and profound with graite I could not take another minute of it. I literally lifted the speakers as my girl slid the granite out and it was an instant change. They now sit on the kitchen counter as a cooling slab for drawing the heat out of cakes, pies, and cookie tins after baking!!
I am glad stone works for some though!!! rega1 |

My mate Graham and I have identical systems. He has now removed the Tesco slabs and redeployed them for culinary use. In his room he prefers the spikes through the carpet. I am leaving mine in place for sonic and domestic reasons. I am still tinkering with speaker positioning and the slabs make that much easier.

The musical qualities of Welsh slate from near St. David's are obviously benefiting from the rhythmic influence of St. Elvis, or perhaps the neighbouring Preseli Mountains.
No, it's not made up. |

A long time ago...............
"look, we've tried the Welsh stuff, and it just destroys the PRAT. What are we gonna do with all this stone?" "Just chuck it over there in a big circle, no-one will ever know..." |

And how far is Stonehenge from Salisbury? Not far, even for those days. Perhaps it all led to the production of the primitive hifi stand, the Naim Slait! pip pip Don |
