That's a shame because I had heard the Meats. BTW I think you could get some Allaes or nSat/nSub for the price of those .... just a thought.

I see that you have Dyn's now.
I think you should broaden your search to possibly other brands as well.
Are you opposed to 2nd hand?

Is that a Freudian slip?

Thanks for these iniital thoughts...
Munch: Why do you suggest that it is worth the effort to hear the Neats? Which, in particular? Are the MFS worth the expense?
ROTF: I would probably go for used SBLs over Allaes and am not too keen on nsat/nsub although actually haven't heard them. I would probably have a 2 hour drive to hear Naim loudspeakers, which don't seem to be that common/popular in the US.
Jeff: I have also considered Totem Mani-2s but they difficult to drive. They're still an option, though. I do appreciate your suggestion, and I have not limited my search to these two brands. My question was really just how do these two compare specifically.
Kuma: No, merely a slip of the right index finger.
I'm still interested in anyone's thoughts of how the Neat's compare to the Dynes.
Cheers, Mike

Is there a reason you've excluded the Momentum 4i?

I have Dyne Contour 1.1s, has well as a Momentum 4i, Motive 3s.
To me the Neat speakers communicate much better. Thats not to say the Dynes are bad, and I really like their presentation. I was happy with them for years.
The 4i are just is a different league. Fantastic.
Cheers Andrew

Anyone compared the 4i against the Elite se?
My Naim dealer doesn't stock any Neats but there are plenty of forum members who like the Elite se's at the end of an all Naim rig.

I have Neat Elite SE's on the end of CDX/102/HC/NAPSC/180 and they absolutely rock.
I have only ever heard Dynaudio's studio monitors, so cannot comment on the ones you're looking at.

Thanks for the additional comments, I hope they keep coming...
Jim: I have only eliminated the 4i because I think the 3i will have enough bass for my room, will work on my existing stands and I tend to like the open sound of monitors.
Anddrew: Since the Momentum 4i are priced higher than the Contours, I would expect them to be superior, but the C1 is a more expensive speaker than the Momentum, and the MFS (Neat again) are more expensive than the C1. I know it doesn't always come down to expense, but from a certain perspective you do get what you pay for. I suppose I am trying to assess value for money and also characteristic differences between different ranges of Neat and Dynaudio.

After a while it comes down to more the philosophy of the designer than price. And Neat do have a definite philosophy which comes through in their designs.

Mike, I have a similar system to you and have just changed from 12 year old credo's to a pair of momentum 4i's, I am so staggered by the improvement in sound I've hardly left the house for 4 days. Everything that's been written about them is true. Try the 3's.

I've had Contour 1.8s for a number of years and have always loved the balance and universality of the sound.
However, at the Bristol show in February I was unimpressed by the rather muddy sound from both Contour 3.4s and the one-off Sapphire, though either result could have been the system. Conversely, the Neat Momentum 4 driven by just a Supernait (I think) sounded beautifully open, so I think that if I were buying now, I'd look at Neats. Or the PMC OB1i......

Mike,
I did listen to some Contours - not sure which ones, but they were big - while on my great speaker quest, and found them to be above reproach, but uninvolving, and lacking in bass to my taste. I finally settled on some Ultimatums (MF7's) because of the magic way in which they'll play a tune, with buckets of bass to boot.
