A cartride which really suits these arms, I find, is the Denon 103R version which can be had for reasonable money - but as I said earlier, I'd love to hear what your DV17 does!

Some may say this Cartridge/arm is overkill! But trust me, not from here it isn't. Strange but when I moved from a DV20XH to the 17D3 on the Rega, it wasn't as great as I thought. I used the 'Baerwald' method of alignment for this but I was not convinced the money was well spent. The SME/DV17d3 is however sensational. Led Zepplin 2 now on Smile

Just dug out the earliest cart receipt I could find - Linn Karma from 1984 - £349. Still, I remember inflation was pretty rampant 1974-84. That was the year I traded my 12S for a 32 (£339) with hi-cap (£327). Isobariks cost £1265, plus £65 for stands, the previous year.

With all due respect, John, your deck does look as if it needs a little bit of TLC!

Jon,

Looks are not everything Winker I have been running this deck with this arm/cartridge combo for a few days now against the deck below. Ittok 2/Ortofon FF25/Valhalla. Correctly set up and I can say that my early deck/arm combo has more emotion and involvement and dynamics that the borrowed one. Cartridge has been on both decks too.

Although I'm considering getting a LP12 - as people on here are keen to point out my lack of a "decent" source.

I'm still going to give my Technics SL1200 an OL1 with "OL internal rewire/structural upgrade" update first.

good pics - and interesting read - keep it up

Beware of OL'ing a Rega arm.

Although I prefer the OA, what's wrong with OL?

Hi John

Firstly,

quote:
Rega does not approve of any modification or rewiring carried out on our tonearms by other companies. The high rigidity and weight of wires used in many common modifications will often lead to excessive bearing wear and restriction on bearing movement. This shortens the life of the product and will lower performance.

Secondly, the OL modified arm I saw and heard at length did not look impressive and it did not sound as good as the stock arm. The OL quality control may not the world's greatest. The guy who runs it seems OK and will refund your money when you're not happy with the results.

The one example I've seen from OA looked and sounded a lot better to me.

It was about 1974/5/6 (not 100% sure) that an old friend of mine (he wasn't old back then) bought an LP12/SME/Shure V15 to replace his Pioneer PL12D, but me being very astute went for a Garrard Zero 100S with a tangential arm Smile

For some reason he kept his deck a lot longer than I kept mine.

Well, here it is, Peter at Cymbiosis has done a fantastic job on the deck.

New Maple plinth
Hercules PSU
Service

Sounded good before, sounds even better now!!
I went up to Leicester yesterday from Reading (I am prepaired to travel for a good service!) and spent the whole day with Peter and I was very impressed at his knowledge and passion for the products he sells and services. I have never seen the whole Naim range all together before Fantastic!
Peter spent from 11am to 5pm on my deck and fitted a new cartridge to my friends LP12 (and did a bit more than he should).
Sorry the SME was a bit of a pain on the plinth Peter! Anyway he also had my brand of speakers (Leema) on the end of a 202/200/stageline combo and showed me what an Aro/Linn/DV XV1-S can do (oh dear big mistake) well, something to aspire to I suppose.
I recommend anyone who needs a jolly good day out and learn about the LP12 should consider Cymbiosis, Just don't go in a Vectra VXR if you want any fuel left Big Grin
Thanks again Peter and to all your staff, they were most helpful and make good coffee.

ATB

John
