Yes John - these older decks really can sound special and I wish more people would do what you have done and give them a chance before automatically updating.

Mrs Abbydog is now home, so as soon as she's finished in the kitchen (had to sack maid to afford Naimed LP12) she'll give me a hand grovelling in the rack to change Plinius dip switch to 100 ohm. Should be about half an hour to a verdict!

John, as a complete ignoramus on this arm please may I ask how you got the DV17d3 set up in what appears to be a headshell with fixed mounting holes?
Thanks and happy listening, James

All SMEs use a sliding bedplate and elongated mounting hole so the entire arm slides forwards and backwards to set overhang. The same idea is used in the Aro slide for the Avid deck, IIRC.

How's the deck coming along, John?

Hi James As stated above, very easy really and much better than setting up than a Rega or similar with the protractor. ATB John

Hi Stuart
Thanks for that, can't make my mind up on which one gives the most pleasure!! The Technics/AO 250 Gives the information as it is with the 'boogie' factor and the LP12/SME has greater dynamics with passion. Strangely, a higher spec LP12 did not do it for me as my friends LP12/Ittok II /Valhalla is surley superior yes? For sure, the Technics has the least rumble and noise from the platter but.....

In 78 i had the top Technics tt for home use, Not the radio studio tt. I have the photo i took of it on my desk now but cant remember the numbers that came after the SL. It came with its own arm (shite) put the SME 3 Plus the damping tray on a while later. It was a great sounding tt. After that another LP12 with the same arm. Not as good but the set up was no where near as good as it should of been. Then went to a Luxman with the same arm again. And that was the dogs until my Systemdeck Linn Arm in 81. I had a few others to play around with as well in those days. Stuart

Ahhh, now there lies the issue...in some ways yes, in some ways no I think. There is certainly a quality to the earlier decks which was lost...

Listening to ZZ Top Eliminator, commercial yes, but the album has one of the strongest Bass and lead guitar action I know and well recorded (as most albums were then and before) Sound? Bloody fantastic. Using the Nait 5i-2 on the end with the D-75 and as the press said on this amp, 'Does not run out of steam as before' Yep, they were right! (using a 'pm' setting ) ATB John

An album your Linn was made to play, I think. Its sensational on stuff like that. I still haven't found anything which beats an early Linn on Little Feat, for example.

Ok, ok, ok, Led Zepplin 1 is on now, I think it's gonna be a long night....
Why do people say the SME 3009 s2 is passed it? A good re wire and correctly set up it's superb.

Beats me. I have a 3012 mounted on a TD 124 and a lovely 3009 S2 fixed headhsell on a TD 125 II and they're really musical arms. As you say, apart from the ancient wiring they are fine. All the spares are still available from SME, too, although they are not cheap.
A cartride which really suits these arms, I find, is the Denon 103R version which can be had for reasonable money - but as I said earlier, I'd love to hear what your DV17 does!

That's what mine had in it, with a Connoisseur BD1.
