Just listening on this miserable and wet day when something strange seems to have happened to my 82 powered by supercap. Playing a vinyl all ok but went to the mute and although lit up sound still coming through. Turned it on and off and all seemed ok. I thought I would try another input ie. tuner and very faint sound coming no volume even with volume turned up high. Thought I would try a cd into CDX and XPS. Same horrible muffled sound .

Turned off supercap and main amp checked connections ie snaics and all inputs to the 82. Same muffled sound low volume even when turned up. Went back to a record via a prefix and hicap all ok.

Can the forum suggest what has gone wrong and what other checks I can carry out.

Much appreciated.
Tony

I am struggling to follow your explaination. Are you saying that if you switch to the tuner input (assuming you have nothing plugged into the tuner input), and turn the sound up loud, you get a poor distorted version of the sound from another input. This is normal, I have just tried it on my 52 and it does the same - it's just channel breakthrough and I don't think that in itself is a fault.

The mute thing, sounds strange however, are you saying the mute light comes on, but it doesn't actually mute the sound?

Out of interest where in Somerset are you? Nr Langport myself.

Hi Gary

Thanks for responding. When I said I was trying different inputs I meant to say I was going to try the tuner and then the mute thats when it all sounded muffled. I then put a CD on and it sounded muffled. The mute at this point seemed to working ok. Tried swithcing the tuner from the tuner input to another input same result. The CD has the big cable powering it from the XPS. It seems to me that the signal from the Prefix to the Hicap then to the 82 works ok but other sources sound like they are another room. Something seems to have failed in the 82. Any ideas?

I live in Weston super Mare.

So, if I'm reading things right, the turntable sounds fine, but all other sources are muffled?

If you're using a prefix/hicap I think I'm right in saying that you aren't using the internal phono stage and that the prefix/hicap connects to the 82 using a 5 pin interconnect. If so, try putting this into the input that you have been using for CD.

Or alternatively try putting the CD into the input you have been using for the turntable. This should help identify which inputs are playing up.

The reason I was asking where you lived was just in case you were round the corner from me, in which case you would have been welcome to try the 82 in my system to trouble shoot, but you're probably 45mins away - the offers always there if you need it.

Hi Gary

Thanks for the offer.

The mute is lighting up on all inputs but not working. Something catastrophic has happened internally. Looks like I'll be without a music system for a few weeks.

For your interest I have an LP12 with prefix powered by hicap
(originall 1984 version rebuilt) ARO with dynavector ti Kiatora 82 supercap with 250 CDX & XPS Chord Signature feeding some Living Voice OBX on Fraims.

Aha - finally another LV owner surfaces on the forum - although I 'only' have the Avatar-IIs.

Great sounding, though not sure I would put them on fraims Winker

Hope your problems get sorted soon - being music-less is no joke.

Hi Ian

The equipment is on Fraim I am experimenting with Missing Link feet under the OBS R2's. This was all brought about by experiencing accoustic problems in my listening room and the dealer I bought the LV's from came out ot look at the problem. A very interesting day spent. Because I have a small room 15 X 8 breeze block either side stud wall to rear and LV's firing base port to rear corners there was a lot of reflection. The upshot is we tried Advanced Accoustic panels and corner blocks. Very good result. The surprising thing was the effect of the missing link feet. I was listening to lyrics again and not the sound but fine detail was revealing. We are all slaves to our passion. I will be getting some accoustic damping panels and the Missing Link feet.

Regards

Tony
