Dispite my post 'LP12 Give it a rest people' I found or was rather given a very early LP12 with an SME 3009 S2 arm. Stored for over 30 years is a project I could not resist!
I have stripped the wood back to the lovely original and will french polish it. Had the arm modified by Audio Origami and Just about to fit a Hercules PSU.
However, I would like a Cirkus Kit. Where can I get it from and how much should I pay?

Why not restore it to its original condition, with original power supply (red button etc)? Its well worth doing and will give you a vinyl sound which is great with many of the 70s recordings for which it was designed.

Take it to a good dealer let him put the Curkus in and set it up so you can get the best from it.
Its the best way to go IMO.
YOU CAN DO THESE THINGS YOURSELF BUT YOU WILL NEVER GET IT TO SOUND ITS BEST.

If you fit a Hercules or Valhalla to an early LP-12 the baseboard will not fit correctly. No dealer should advise operating without the baseboard removed, a new plinth would be required as the newer corner braced ones are deeper. Cirkus kits are not available as spares items and should be fitted by a trained dealer, set up on an LP-12 is critical to sound quality.

I haven't had problems with the switch, it's the baseboard that bows because it rests on the psu smoothing caps...... not recommended....

You sometimes have to work on the plastic edge with a blade to get it snug.

All interesting comments chaps, we will see. I have the modded crossbrace already but interesting on the depth issue. My plinth has the same depth as a braced version.

Even if you do nothing else, you need to get the suspemsion sorted with black bolts, springs etc.

I have Darren. Munch's deck top plate is S/n 4000 ish and I had to ease both his Hercules originally and his Lingo switch form his new 2 yesterday.

- Yeah quite right Dave but it helps if you can spell suspension first! LOL. Razz Sorry Dave, that was just too good to resist Big Grin

If you have a look on Linn's website, you'll see in the retailer section who is an LP12 specialist, they are highlighted with a turntable icon.

Costs for work may vary, but remember, a stripdown and re-build of an old deck would take me 3-4 hours to do it properly in my opinion. Beware the quick fixers. The cost of the Cirkus in the UK is about £410 and includes new bearing, subplatter, subchassis, armboard, springs, bushes, two belts, oil and a new chassis earthing wire. It does not come with the five bolts (now black) that Darren (Northern Bloke) is suggesting you change. By the way, I suggest you change them too as the new ones are more robust. You will also require new nuts at the same time of course. If the motor is tired, they are about £90 and a new mounting kit with the four domes is about a tenner (I suggest you have this fitted anyway - Is there a cradle extending around the motor keeping the thrust in place?). Oh yes, pair of new type hinges with back plates will be about £20.

Now go and find yourself a local dealer. If in doubt as to who? Why not phone a couple of them for advice and see how you are looked after!

I hope the above helps you in your search.

Regards,

Peter

What's the serial No - I can't read it on my laptop? It's not really, really early as I can see it has the top plate fixing holes - you can see what I mean to the left of the rear bolt.
