Hi all;

I thought I'd share the development of my new hifi room. Some of you may know that I'm changing houses and I have a dedicated room for my toys.

Here are some pictures of the near raw room. Only two things that have already been "done" are the edition of gypson board false ceiling and the wiring of a dedicated mains spur. I'll update the pics on the thread whenever something new is done. Hopefully it should be completed by 2 weeks Smile

Here are the pics.

This is the room from the back. Roughly 7 x 4.5 meters

The room is 7 x 4.5 meters and constructed out of an aluminum frame with heat and sound insulation elements. The floor is made out of wooden boards of about half an inch thickness that rest on an robust aluminum frame. There is a 20 cm gap between the concrete floor and the wooden floor.

What make is your hifi system - I don't recognise it. Isn't it unusual to have both speakers side by side in a big box like that?

Um, err, it was my attempt at a joke.
I was trying to suggest that your air conditioning unit might be some sort of unknown upmarket hifi.
It's hot in UK at the moment - the silly season.
Sorry for any paranoia caused.
I look forward to seeing your room as it progresses, and your real hifi installed.
Good luck

Don

You did scare me for a while :P Just to reassure you that old air condition will be thrown out the window and replaced with a much more elgeant unit. We need it in Riyadh as temperature last week was 50 degrees centigrade during the day and 42 at night :S

Don: I thought your humor was hilarious. As Lary the Cable Guy (Blue Collar Comedy fame) would say: "That's funny right there. Anybody that don't think that's funny needs to get the hell out of here right now!"

Flame: Good luck on your project. You will love it and hate it, praise it and curse it before its over. It will be interesting and fun to watch your progress.

By the way, where did you get that large Bass Trap to the left of your speakers setting in the floor?

The room looks very very square and with gaps between everything all round could sound a little weird. Have you considered this?

Room is 4.5 x 7 meters so I hope that this makes it more rectangular than square Winker hehehe I have no other room that I can use for HIfi so I don't really have a choice. I'll just have to set things up and see how it goes

The floors... That's the one thing I'm most worried about.I understand taht I have a few challenges ahead and hopefully I'll be able to deal with them. I have purchased a good amount of free rockwool that I will stuff under the suspended wood in order to eliminate/minimize any resonance that might come from the cavity beneath. Last thing I want is for the hollow below to resonate like the body of a guitar, especially if it happens in the low frequency spectrum.

The other concern I have is the fact that the floor flexes slightly as you walk over it. I have also secured a large number of heavy marble tiles that will be placed below every speaker, stand or rack. With the addition of furniture I hope some stability will be added.

Lastly, because I get really pissed off from harsh trebble I'm going to have the floor carpeted as well as the back wall that will be close to the speakers and the location of the projector screen.

If you think there are a few more tricks that can help please share them Smile

Regards...

Cellulose fill might be less expensive and you may be able to stuff the area better.When I saw your pics,I was terrified of the potential issues you may have.Any speaker with a flex floor? Oh boy...I would stack 2 foot*2 foot plywood high enough(under the floor)to make contact with the floor.Try this under the speakers first.This will give the speakers the support and rigidity they will need to be focused and less muddied.If this works? Do the same thing as much as possible throughout the whole floor. The rest filled with cellulose or high density wool.The walls you have will be very reflective.I would suggest you contact,"www.realtraps.com". This will fix all the issues with the walls and will not cost you an arm and leg compared to other fixes.Your concern about harsh highs will be negated by the realtraps and you will end up with a more detailed and organic sound.
Your contact at realtraps is Ethan..

Best,
Marc

Hi Marc;

The room is a portable that is residing on the roof of the house. When it was time to think of possibilities to stuff/occlude the cavity below the wooden floor the engineers discouraged me as the structural rigidity of the roof wouldn't support much added weight ( I wanted concrete Big Grin ) I did check out realtraps and was impressed with their products, but when the cost of international shipping was considered I decided to wait a bit. I viewed their educational videos and read a bit about constructing your own "realtraps". I am lucky to have a rockwool factory only 20 miles from where I live and the material is being offered very cheap. The total cost of rockwool to fill the cavity was only $80, which I think is dirt cheap.

Thank you for pointing out a few potential issues that I'm kinda expecting with the room. My plan is to get things up and going and to add more room treatments as needed Smile Will keep you all updated.

Regards...

Hi guys;

It's been a while since I did anything as the rest of the house is taking priority at the time. I managed to take the woddboar floors off today to place the rockwool padding. As you guys might remember I'm doing this to eliminate any potential "singing along" and resonance coming from the cavity below the wood. I used 40 Kgs of freee rock wool but I seriously think that I'll need another 40Kgs. Factory is closed right now and I'm worn out from waiting 4 hours in the 47 degree sun to get my motorbike driver's license. So that will wait until tomorrow... Here are some pics. Comments and advice appreciated as always. Thanks

This is one of them 20 Kg bags. To show everybody how the raw material looks like. I ignored advice on another website advising to wear gloves and ended up with a mild rash. Went away after a quick wash with water.
