Given how ubiquitous 45 rpm audiophile pressings have become, I'm surprised that Naim hasn't come out with version of the Armageddon that can drive a turntable at 45 RPM. Now I know there are work arounds, but couldn't Naim at least offer a turntable power supply with multiple speed settings, like the Linn Lingo?

The Armageddon was, like the Prefix, designed a long time ago and intended to improve over the existing LP12 power supply (Valhalla I think). It uses a very simple solution to powering the synchronous LP12 motor correctly but was only ever designed to allow the motor to synchronise correctly to the mains frequency - giving a platter rotation of 33 rpm. In the US (with different mains frequency) one needs to use a different diameter pulley to achieve this playing speed. To cater for 45 rpm one would either have to alter the mains frequency, change the pulley (see above - 45 rpm adapter) or design something entirely different. Given that we do not make the LP12 - it is unlikely that sales of such a device would justify the cost of development - and there is no guarantee that we could, through complexity, improve on the existing unit for 33 rpm. |
