PROBLEM: I'm looking for a set of speakers to use with the above system, I listen mainly to Soul, Jazz, Hip hop and Reggae.I've got about £1300 to spend (tops) my room is about 6m x 3m.I have heard the Neat motive 2 8/10 Very good, but i would like to no what you guys think about the PMC Gb1(new verson) and the JM labs 816v.Would these be a better match?

Try Rega R5/R7 as an alternative.

Or hunt out some Royds: No longer made they are among the finest small speakers, and an easy load for the amplifier. Consider Edens, Sintras [both standmounts], or Minstrels [miniature floorstanders, which I have in tow of a 140] among the smaller and very easy to drive models. They are fantastically musical, and keep the musical balances beautifully, and are lightening fast in the Naim way!

I had some Royds about 16 years ago, some small standmounts, i dont remember the model number but they were one of the best speakers i have ever had. I was using them with a sugden A21a amp and a cambridge audio C D player.

I have also tried out some Kudos C1 and did not like them one bit.a nice musical sound ,but a bit thin sounding ie(No Bass)...(6/10).

Also i tried some naim Arrivas,same kind of sound like the C1 but not as musical, but better in some areas(7/10).

The small nSats that Naim make would be worth a listen, though I have not encountered them. They do get high praise and should not be overlooked especially as getting a dem should be easy.

And of the small Royds, the one I missed out is the Seven, which is a sort junior brother to the Eden and still nice [same sized enclosure]. You can someetimes find them as scrap now which I think is amazing. Of course I am very fond of my Minstrel SE model speakers, and you are quite right, in saying that there is no absence of bass, though it will not rattle the windows of course.

Very nice, very musical and really quite unrefined. The Edens are a few million miles more sophisticated ... or better.

Personally, I would try the PMC GB1 as you mentioned or TB2. With their transmission line loading, and with your preference of music genres, PMC speakers should be good for the bottom end especially with reggae.

Hope you find speakers you're happy with.

That is why I left them out of my first post, and mentioned them in the same sentance as scrap! Nice speaker, but refined? No, I would say not!

Never heard the GB1's but I have the PMC TB2+ driven by the same set-up as you Nait5i + CD5i, and I have to say it's an awesome combo for the money. I have a similar sized room to you and I'd suggest that anything more in terms of power capacity and physical size is starting to look like overkill! The TB2+ are not floor-standers so if you went for these you need a good pair of stands - I chose the PMC Tube 60 stands and these are on Linn Skeet Floor Protectors.

Looking at the PMC website it seems PMC have changed the TB2+ design yet again to the TB2i (well, they've added a fashionable 'i' to all their models now) - feedback on these is hard to come by so you'll have to go listen for yourself to determine if this a genuine upgrade or just a move to a different sonic characteristic. Meantime if you see clear-out deals on the TB2+ you could pick these up safe in the knowledge that you are getting a seriously good speaker to go with your Naim system.

I think PMC's qualities shine through regardless of musical genre, and I also think PMC have something of a 'house-sound' (no doubt partly due to the transmission-line design) even right up to the enormous IB1 systems, so I'm pretty sure if you like the sound of one model you will enjoy almost anything from this company.

My TB2's are quite fussy about positioning so it took me a while and some acoustic treatment (bass traps etc) to get a sound I was finally happy with, but this will be the case with practically all port-based designs especially in a smaller room. Your room is even smaller than mine, so if you are very limited in available positioning options you really must get a home demo to be sure a given speaker is going to work well in there.

Finally, it goes without saying to leave the last portion of your budget for some NACA5 cable. You might consider procuring the cable with a bespoke F-connector on one end to fit the bi-wireable PMC's, otherwise a lot of Forum members seem to recommend removing the brass links and replacing this with short-lengths of NACA5. Absent all this, be sure to wire into the tweeter holes as opposed to the woofer ones.

Hi Camron-1

What speakers are you using now, and how do they sound?...
The reason I ask is that if you got a thin sound i.e.(No Bass) out of Arrivas, then there may be something wrong... i.e.(out of phase maybe). The same would apply to the Kudos I would have thought.

Might be worth checking!

IMO, PMC will do reggae well… Royd’s will do it quietly…

I am not using any speakers at the moment... Hence the question,I had a home Demo of the Arrivas and the Kudos,and No disrespect but i no now to wire speakers.

They definitely work better if you wire them! And even better when you have some.

No disrespect meant, it was just a thought…I do know that laminate floors can play havoc with room acoustics.

I second that(I own Nait5i/CD5i/R7's), great sound for jazz, and soul. They sit very close to the back wall with the sub-woofer firing to the outside.

Good speakers, but nSats sound better to me for similar money.
