BINGO!! Don't know if the journey is strictly necessary now - after this evening, the sitting room carpet may look like the arm of an extra on 'Trainspotting', but I've got the C10s and their bass nailed! It just needed an extra 1" or so further forward to get that forward bass thing (on double bass etc) back in line. Sounding truly superb. Not the deepest extension, but so tuneful. With the liquid treble, could well be worth compromising over. As I recall, the C20s were not just C10s but deeper. The extension alters the overall presentation. I wouldn't want to lose that treble! Rory Gallagher's 'Calling Card' is particularly worthy of mention, I feel - simply EXTRAORDINARY (for those who were at the Saturday of the Signals' summer bash, Naim's Mark R was kind enough to use this track to demonstrate the stepped progression from CDS3/XPS2 via HiLine and 555PS to full 555). What's more important? The C10s' treble, which brings so much to the whole party, or the possible extra bass extension the C20s might bring...(at extra cash)...? Yours in a quandry, James |

Reporting back the morning after the night before...
"It's the extra inch that does the trick" said Mrs JWM last night as we experienced that 'eureka’ moment together. Referring, of course, to hoiking forward the C10s a bit. That slight forwardness on the upper bass, which was particularly evident on double bass, is tamed, and everything seems to have completely clicked into place, sounding really well integrated. (If anything, they could go back ¼”…) Reflected on this in conversation with Alastair. On Saturday, the Signals home dem day, I wasn’t immediately grabbed by the C20s in the same way that I was with the C10s. Again, this might be a positioning thing to get just right. But on the day my clear feeling was that I wanted Signals to leave the C10s rather than the C20s. This must tell me something. And then there's the WAF... Hoiking them forward a bit has resulted in SWMBO liking the C10s much much more!! Whereas the very deep but rather imprecise bass of the ProAcs would float nicely through the house (they sounded better in the hall than in the sitting room!), the bass of C10 in ‘earlier’ position was rather headache-making around the house – I thought it was quite authentic really, a bit like being outside a venue with a gig going on inside!! This, she commented unprompted, has changed now. So, without complicating it yet further with more 3hr round trips to Signals for the C20s, we’ve decided to go with a pair of C10s, sans naff badge, in Sycamore (her choice, but I like it too). Although I will not be trying out the C20s again (sorry to disappoint you, everyone!), don't forget that Gary is!! Let us know what you think, Gary! Now for us, decision made, we can relax with the loan pair, enjoying music, waiting for our new little beauties to arrive, and wondering just how we can manage to take more photos of them than Scotty and his new LP12 ... DUCK...! All the best and thanks for your comments and encouragement. James |
