I am sure I will add more in due course, but I cannot today end without saying what a great day out JN and I had in Leicester, and to give a heartfelt 'thank you' to Peter Cymbiosis for the tremendous care and attention to detail he spent on my LP12 today - it really has been fettled like it has never been fettled before! Stripped down to the last bolt and completely rebuilt.

And a particular thank you to Peter for allowing us to witness the operation, and putting up with us (well me mainly) twittering on.

My only heart-in-mouth moment was the initial 'crack' accompanying the movement (finally, after much wrestling by Peter on the floor) of the much-over-tightened arm collar nut. And after a while I learned not to feel guilty at Peter's sharp intake of breath and tut-tut as yet another little horror was discovered lurking underneath... (learned not to feel guilty because it wasn't ME who shoved all the extra junk inside, or took shortcuts...)

Brad - we need to compare just how many superfluous nuts and washers were hidden under the covers!

One of the most interesting moments was the dem afterwards, when Peter (knowing how worried I was about it after the flack I had received) gave us a practical idea of the amount of rubbish (or NOT) pumped into a Naim set-up by a Lingo 1, by playing a CD in a Naim system with the Lingo being plugged and unplugged - blind from the point of view of us listening.

Instead of the much proclaimed 'substantial degradation', any change with the Lingo plugged in was in fact so minimal as to be completely negligable - was it plugged now, or not plugged in?

We got back to my place safely, if a little later than anticipated, and got the deck into place. And played a few things (JN didn't like the Bob Marley, so we went on to some Dire Straits...) before going out for an excellent curry at our new, very splendid - and JN thought remarkably inexpensive - local curry house.

I'll save my judgement on the sound for another day, after I've had more of a chance to listen. All I'm saying for now, from what we heard this evening is Smile

John might be able to add a picture of the fully fettled deck spinning way in the Leicester dem room.

Sadly (Brad and MG Bear) Bruin the Bear couldn't make the trip - he had a late night the night before and was feeling a little delicate. (Mind you, JN also thought he'd got up in the middle of the night to get to mine in time for the off...)

which just proves the age-old theory that you can lead a bloke to curry after a day-full of hifi, but you can't get him to listen to music that is full of soul. Cool

Nice one James Smile

It is definitely an education to see Peter wrestle with the various parts of an errant LP12. From what I recall, there was quite a box of reject bits and bobs when Peter had finished.

We seem to have had similar reactions to Peter's sharp intakes of breath and tut-tuts - but we both know that it is for the best.

I am away for a few days, but I will look out for your thoughts on how it now sounds when I get back. (Department Xmas bash in Dublin Cool)

Cheers

Brad

It's a pity Bruin the bear couldn't make the trip Frown

Hi.

Yes I was happy to let you watch and see - no problems. I'm happy to comment on things if I'm asked to, as you, like many people are/were very interested. Smile Your deck was pretty well set up anyway save for a rattly top-plate the non removed remains of a Valhalla beneath the P-clip and ofcourse the use of Fairy liquid on the spring bushes causing a bit of a sticky mess - yuk! Frown

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed your curry and...... how the LP12 now sounds Cool

Kind regards,

Peter

Fantastic James, it sounds like you had a great day.

I look forward to hearing more from you on the comparative merits of the Lingo v Origin Live.

It must have been fascinating to watch 'the guru' in action.

Regards

Mark

Mark, we seem to have migrated to JN's Thread Driving Round Leicester (Gently) With a Gramophone which has a number of photos too.

In brief, living at my office means I've been able to listen on and off during the day, with a whole hour at lunchtime!

With the fully fettled and Lingo'd LP12, and the slight adjustments to the speaker position (as mentioned on the other thread) not only LP, but also CD have never sounded so good - life, detail, grip! And, I suspect, a bit more adjustment over coming weeks may wring out even more from the system.

(Still no sign of the Lingo 'screwing up the sound' which I had been promised by some hereabouts as an inevitability...!)
