Heard the SBLs and really like the snappy and timely bass and the bass slam. Would prefer to buy new so SBL may not be in for me.
Does Allaes have the same bass characteristics of SBLs? Just curious, anyone moves to Allaes because their SBLs are ageing or any other reasons that you would like to share? |

Hi,
As a former SBL owner i can identify with what you are saying. having heard the Allae a while ago and not being that impressed with their Bass Abilities. (I considered them for the same reasons you are - ie I prefer to buy speakers new as well) I would suggest you would be looking at SL2 to replicate the SBL experience new. SBL's are a hard act to follow, especially when you consider their 2nd hand VFM !! Why don't you buy a pair, then replace the drivers (this isn't a massive investment) thus you will to all intents have a brand new pair of SBL's for not a lot of dosh !!! What do others think ? not a bad idea Mark! in fact, if the punter likes SBL's, why not just look for a decent late pair, and setup and listen with big grin! surely Vik can locate a pair for you? They are/were outstanding value even when new (yes I am clearly biased), and are even more attractive at today's prices. buy now before they become a sought-after classic!
Mark correctly points out that the SL2 is the nearest NEW thing. It should be noteworthy that without knowing more about YLL's system and setup, it is difficult to make a blanket recommendation. Rico - SM/Mullet Audio |

YLL
i am using Allaes in an active set-up, and would definitely not criticize them for lack of bass, in fact had to pull them further out into the room for my taste. In passive mode the sbl is regarded by many as a better speaker, but from what i can see sbls involve lots of fiddling about, tweaking careful postioning and setup, also they require periodic maintenance, whereas the Allaes are a lot less fussy and give good results right from the off, and really come alive in an active setup. I am currently considering trying some new Allaes to replace my ageing SBL's and will of course report my findings in these here parts.
I would expect the Allae to produce a more three dimensional image, sound tonally a shade warmer but maybe lose a little snap and zing compared to the SBL's. |

John, I'd have thought SL2's would have been a realistic step given your system's capability? Look forward to reading your Allae impressions nonetheless.

Greetings Rico
Yes indeed, SL2's are the logical progression and a fine pair of speakers; but I have a problem with their appearance and price. I've been impressed with Neat MF5's at shows, but I think they're also around £5k n'est ce pas? Might I see you at the show on Sunday? |
