Almost an abusive use of the forum I know. But rapid knowledge needed.
The joys of s/h buying before the next man
Its nearly midnight and I'm due to see a S/H ARO and Armaggedon tomorrow(found out about it this p.m)If you're awake through diurnal (or urinal) dysfunction or just awaiting your next episode of seachange(calling Ross Blackman et al)
please help

The Aro is 9 yrs old--have there been any mods that explain the good price of this vintage?
Is there anything to look out for--\there is not the worries of a naffed gimbal bearing in an Aro but can you damage the unipivot? Can things crack or work loose?

Apart from checking that it is now not an s shaped arm--i haven't a clue?

The armageddon-just a toroidal and a minute phase shifting cicuit board with a few tant. caps I understand--I assume a serviceable 10yr old one sounds like new--not much to service on an armageddon then.

Thanks and may you get to sleep quickly soon

Regards
Richard

Richard,

I don't think I can give you any advice on this one (particularly since I don't much like the ARO), apart from the obvious: look for marks or scratches indicating mis-handling. Make sure the bearing moves freely in all directions.

I think you're right that there's not much damage that can have been done to the Armageddon. At worst you might need to have it re-capped. (I have an Armegeddon and I really do like it, unlike the ARO).

Perhaps others can offer some more insightful comments.

Good luck!

Ross

PS "Seachange" has finished, and I never watched it anyway.

...thank god. They haven't put that one on the poor unsuspecting Brits, have they? Surely Kylie was enough punishment!

I've spent the last 3 yrs in Brisbane(a controversial disclosure to larrakins from Sydney and Adelaide I know).
I even like seachange(a big ABC fan)and Melbourne bitter---mmmmmh maybe with this dodgy taste Ross I'll love the ARO.

Thanks for the comments from the Aussie possie.
I miss it all in the depth of a pommie winter.

you're not wrong and its a big ask
regards Richard

PS I understand Seachange is still popping up on a sunday night-almost the end of the series--you just can't buy information this good

I fitted the ARO last night----vast improvement.
Very impressed the best £300 I've lashed to my Hifi.Half the price of the Ekos 1 s/h price and not such a risk with the bearings.
Haven't noticed a huge difference in bass depth--I'd been warned that the arm is a little light in the lower regions.

Any good cartridge choices for the ARO anyone?

cheers Richard big grin
