Dear Niam Listees
I'm currently a NAC42-5 and NAP140
Philips DVD player and EPOS ES-11 pair
I've also acquired a NAC32-4 and NAP250
with HiCAP from a friend
unfortunately I powered up the HiCAP
and it showed a ominous red light
which I then immediately turned off
any feedback how to proceed from here !
sounds like a instant bummer !!
anyhow , it hasn't been on for years
so it probably needs to go to the workshop
I'm here in Singapore ,
doesn't sound like a promising start
for a up-grader , any suggestions
best wishes and regards, Alex Tseng

Glad to hear of your recent purchase. Do you mean that the hicap was with a red LED and a silver naim audio logo instead of the backlit green variety. If it is, you've probably gotten an old style hicap and you might want to consider recapping it. Service for naim is Singapore is easily obtainable from the friendly dealer in our shores. The last time i enquired, they do recapping of amps/powersupplies for a small fee, depending on the model and make of your equipment. You can email me if you need more information.

Laxton

Thanks Guys for your inputs
it then occured to me
that Reds are permissable
but I still convince that the setup
is screwed !
discard the hicap aside
I connected the 250 to 32.5 witht the
cable attached to socket3 output
that's the only socket permissable
and the 32.5 should light up
but it doesn't ...
the hicap via 5 pin cable from socket4
to socket4 of 32.5 the only permitted way
so nothing blows up
but the pre-amp doesn't light up as well !
anyway , another naim user
is coming over to have a look
do all singaporean naim users
use absolute sound shop ? just curious
best wishes for the new year as well

Looks like you probably have a problem. I am assuming you are using a proper Naim 5 pin SNAIC interconnect - its quite thick and relatively inflexible with a silver locking DIN plug at each end, and a direction indicator band - the cable will probably be grey coloured. There is only one 5 pin socket on the Hicap, and the socket on the 32-5 is marked Hicap socket 4 only or something similar, the preamp should come to life when the Hicap is turned on. Might be worth checking in the preamp case to ensure the LED is in actually connected, I suspect some people removed them as a tweak.

If you have the 5 pin DIN blanking plug (a small black plastic plug that sits in the preamp 5 pin output to enable single PSU rail operation), try the 32-5 powered directly from the 140 with the 4 pin SNAIC. That should pretty much establish if the preamp is knackered or not. The 250 does not have the capability to power the preamp - you need the Hicap to use the 250.

Tony.

stop me if I'm wrong but doesn't it connect as follows: 32.5 to hicap via 5 pin snaic and then from hicap to nap 250 via 4 pin snaic. The 32.5 does NOT connect directly to the 250 but via the hicap.

Indeed - it is exactly as you state. I thought that was what he was doing...

alex,

From your previous post, it seems that you might be a little confused on the connections from preamp/hicap/250. The 250/135/500 cannot power a preamp as they do not have a single 24V voltage rail to the preamp. Only amps like 180 and below can do this. I think the best way is to wait for your friend and see what advice he can give.

Regards
Laxton

PS.Any clue on who this friend is? Since the naim community here is pretty small, we might know each other.
