Just had my neighbour round to listen to various sources in my system. We heard Dreams by Fleetwood Mac (a favourite test track of mine) in the following four formats:
mp3 from my laptop via a Beresford DAC
WAV file from laptop via a Beresford DAC
CD via CD5
LP via LP12
My neighbour, a bright young consultant with the NHS, astounded me by reporting that they all sounded good, but could not tell any difference between the formats.

To my ears the performance inproved in the order set out above.

What is a chap to do?

Don't worry about it. So long as he can tell the difference between a broken arm and an ingrowing toenail....

he might be a bright young thing, but you would have to question his hearing.

Is he firmiliar with 'Dreams'? If not, perhaps re-doing the demo with a favorite track of his will unearth some differences. Having said that, I find it a losing battle trying to get other folks to enjoy hifi, they typically just start talking when I put a song on...

How big of a difference was there between the WAV/Beresford & the CD5?

Actually not that great, not as great as CD5 to LP12. But I run the CD5 with no additional power supply. I really should get one, shouldn't I?

I must admit though, the £400 laptop and £100 Beresford gives an amazingly good sound with WAVs - and I can surf the net while listening!

You might as well be conversing over the music, Don!

Just a thought...

Was he really actively listening, or just humouring you?

If not maybe a blind test (ABX even if poss.) would be more conclusive, with the incentive of a free beer or two for him if he can ID which is which to make sure he really tries Smile

Actually, to make it interesting - you could swap roles afterwards, to see if you can get the order spot on too. Would need to use an MP3 / WAV / CD ripped from the LP to rule out obvious pops / crackles giving the game away too easily.

Jason read over your post again.

Consider how this guy might feel at such a proposal.

Try a better record Big Grin

Fleetwood Mac without PG is like Genesis without PG - give it another go with Pious Bird of Good Omen and he'll never want to listen to mp3 again.

A piano concerto or a huge choral work would sort out the men from the boys. I'm not being a classical snob but I think this type of music is far more demanding on a system than Fleetwood Mac.

Dear Andrew,

Absolutely right I think!

And Royds do the speaker part rather nicely with a Naim amp! Don't they?!?!?!
