I know that we have covered this ground before, but I have a CDS1 that normally behaves impeccably. The only CD up until now that has given me any problem was Cathode’s ‘Special measures.’ In the end I took the CD back and bought it on vinyl. However, I recently bought two Murcof CD’s; Utopia and Martes, and both CD’s cause the CDS1 to momentarily shut down. Suspecting DC offset to be the problem, I tried running them through Soundforge and Wavelab using the DC offset removal tools, and I also downloaded a FLAC and converted it to WAV, but I found that each time the CD player shut down at the same points. I’m wondering if very low frequencies could be the cause of the problem rather than DC offset? If so I could run them through a filter and re-burn them.
I recall (and this should be confirmed) a caller saying that his CD player had been shut down by a specific CD title.
At the time I was unaware that the players were direct coupled and quite capable of passing rather dangerous signals at close to DC. As a consequence - there is protection built in to prevent this potentially dangerous event.
Poor studio mastering can permit signals beyond Red Book limits to be encoded. The player cuts out rather than pass them.
You should (next week) check this - long hot day here working on the pool and this answer is Pastis (Ricard) assisted - which, while good for me, is not necessarily an aid to accuracy.
